THEDE, AUBIL, STEEBY & GARVER FAMILIES   10-81

HANS JACOB GERBER (61) is the oldest known Gerber/Garver ancestor of the authors.  The “Souvenir, Garver - Walker Family Reunion,” gives the following biography of Jacob Gerber/Garver.  Gerber is a Swiss name which signifies tanner.  The name was later anglicized to Garver.  Jacob was born in northern Switzerland.  Jacob Gerber married in Switzerland as some of his children were born in Switzerland.  His wife’s name is not known.  Jacob Gerber and his son, Christian, emigrated to America in the year 1730 and settled in the colony of Maryland in the Hagerstown Valley in what is now the county of Washington.  Jacob Gerber was the father of five children:

   John Gerber, b. Maryland
   Samuel Gerber, b. Maryland
   Nancy Gerber, b. Maryland
   Christian Gerber (62), b. Maryland
   Jacob F. Gerber (61.5), b. Maryland

Since grandchildren of Jacob Gerber were born in Maryland, it is likely that Jacob Gerber lived all of his life in Maryland and probably died there.  “Revolutionary War Record of Christian Garver” substantiates this list of children of “Hans Jacob Gerber” listing the exact same names.  It further states that Hans Jacob Gerber “emigrated from Switzerland in 1733, settling in Pennsylvania.”
