CHRISTIAN GERBER (62) is the son of Hans Jacob Gerber.  According to the “Souvenir of the Garver - Walker Family Reunion,” Christian was born in Switzerland and emigrated to America with his father, Jacob, in the year 1730.  Christian Gerber married in Maryland and by his first and second wives raised a large family of children.  The name of Christian’s wives are unknown.

According to “Revolutionary War Record of Christian Garver,” Christian Garver “lived in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, during the Revolutionary War, the record showing that he was taxed on 130 acres of land there in 1782.”   It further states that “Christian Garver was a private 2nd class, of the 7th Company, 10th Battalion, Lancaster County Militia, commanded by Capt. Emanuel Carpenter.”  Catharine (Garver) Clement was admitted on D. A. R. membership on this service (Application number 412508).  The sketch continues by referring to the book “History of Leitersburg District” by H. C. Bell, page 226, and states:  “Christian Garver was the ancestor of the Garver family of Leitersburg District.  In 1790 he purchased 197 acres of land and here resided until his death prior to 1800.  The following names of children occur in a legal document . . . John, Martin, Mary, wife of Jacob Funk, Barbara, Catharine, wife of Michael Summers, David, Elisabeth, wife of Ludwig Snider, Hester, wife of Jacob Harshman, Eve, and Isaac.  It is also known that there are three other sons, Jacob, Abraham and Samuel.”

Melchora Garver further refers to the book “History of Leitersburg District” and states “I think this Christian Garver is credited with twenty-two children.”  Later in the letter, it states that Christian Garver “was married three times and the father of twenty-three children and is said at one time owned about 600 acres of land.”  Christian Garver was the father of at least eighteen children (as indentified in the letter by Melchora Garver):

According to “Revolutionary War Record of Christian Garver,” Christian Garver “resided on his farm near Leitersburg until his death in January, 1798.  Register of Wills office shows that he had no Will.  But the sale of the farm to settle the estate in 1802, his widow Elizabeth is named, also 19 children (Register of Wills, Washington County, Liber O, folio 183, year 1802).  Elizabeth Garver was born August, 1747, and died January 18, 1828, in Washington County.  Her tombstone stands in Jacobs Lutheran Church graveyard near the old Garver farm near Leitersburg.”

According to “Revolutionary War Record of Christian Garver,” Mary Garver married Jacob Funk.  According to Melchora Garver, Mary Garver married Abraham Schmutz and “Polly” Garver married Jacob Funk.  “Polly” is a common nickname for Mary and it is not certain if Mary was married twice or that Mary and Polly were two different daughters of Christian.  Nancy Garver married Yost Gardner.  Fanny Garver married Martin Stockman.  Elisabeth Garver married Ludwig Snider.  Catharine Garver married Michael Summers.  Hester Garver married Jacob Harshman.  Samuel Garver lived at Scotland, Pennsylvania and has a grandson, Luther M. Garver.

CHRISTIAN GERBER, JR. (62.1) is the son of Christian Gerber.  Christian was born on November 1, 1761.  This is substantiated by the 1830 census of Fayette County, Pennsylvania which shows Christian being born between 1760 and 1770.  There is another Christian Garver (born the same time frame) living in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania from 1820 to 1840.  Christian Garver does not appear in the 1820 or 1840 censuses of Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  It is believed that the Fayette County, Pennsylvania refers to our Christian Garver.  Christian Garver married Catharine Miller (born May 25, 1773).  Christian and Catharine Garver were the parents of ten children:

Mary Garver married David Kesler and they had three children:  -  Joseph Kesler,  -  Christopher Kesler,  -  Jonathan Kesler.  John Garver married Lehan Neaver and moved to Wayne County, Ohio in 1830.  In 1840, John and Lehan Garver moved to Elkhart, Indiana.  John and Lehan Garver had eight children:  -  Christopher Garver,  -  Joseph Garver,  -  David Garver,  -  Jacob Garver,  -  Amanda Garver,  -  John Garver,  -  Finley Garver,  -  Jeremiah Garver.  John Garver died on August 29, 1867 in Elkhart, Indiana.  Joseph Garver lived in Bristol, Indiana.  David Garver died while serving in the Army.  Catharine Garver married John Robinson and they had two children:  -  John Robinson, Jr.,  -  Catharine Robinson.  Catharine Robinson married a Mr. Smith.  Samuel Garver married Nancy Ullery and moved to Ohio.  Samuel and Nancy Garver had one son:  -  David Garver.  David Garver lived in Nankin, Ohio.  Martin Garver never married.

DAVID L. GARVER (62.1.1) is the son of Christian Garver, Jr. and Catharine (Miller) Garver.  David was born on October 28, 1796 in Pennsylvania.  On February 20, 1816, David Garver married Sarah Bernhart (born May 10, 1792).  David and Sarah Garver were the parents of ten children:

In 1850, Jonathan and Sarah Garver was living in Wayne County, Ohio.  In 1850, Jonathan’s mother, Catharine (Miller) Garver, was living with Jonathan and Sarah Garver. Jonathan Garver died in 1860 in Homer, Ohio.  After Jonathan died, Sarah (Fulton) Garver moved to Ithica, Michigan.

SUSANNAH GARVER (62.1.9) is the daughter of Christian Garver, Jr. and Catharine (Miller) Garver.  Susannah was born on April 23, 1814 in Pennsylvania.  On May 3, 1838, Susannah Garver married Peter Gault.  Peter was born in 1814 in Pennsylvania and is the son of Richard Gault.  Peter and Susannah Gault were the parents of five children:

DAVID GARVER (62.10) is the son of Christian Gerber.  David was born on October 28, 1776.  Shortly after the death of his father, David Garver moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  David Garver married Katharine Stouffer.  In 1817, they moved to Tyrone Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  David Garver appears in the 1820 and 1830 censuses of Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  David and Katharine Garver were the parents of four children:

SAMUEL GARVER (62.10.3) is the son of David Garver and Katharine (Stouffer) Garver.  Samuel was born on March 16, 1804 at Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  On March 11, 1834, Samuel Garver married Catharine Freed.  Catharine was born on November 19, 1812 and is the daughter of Peter Freed and Christina (Zumbro) Freed.  In the fall of 1857, Samuel and Catharine Garver moved to Cedar Township, Lee County, Iowa.  Samuel and Catharine Garver were the parents of three children:

   Ann Garver, b. December 4, 1834
   Sarah Garver (62.10.3.2), b. July 3, 1836, Fayette County, Pennsylvania
   Jacob Freed Garver (62.10.3.3), b. April 10, 1843, Fayette County, Pennsylvania

Samuel Garver died on March 8, 1880 in Iowa and Catharine (Freed) Garver died on March 21, 1891.  Both were buried in the Big Mound Cemetery in Lee County, Iowa.  Ann Garver married Samuel Boyer (born March 2, 1840) and they moved to Iowa in 1857.  Samuel and Ann Boyer had no children.  Ann (Garver) Boyer died on December 19, 1895 and Samuel Boyer died on February 8, 1905.

SARAH GARVER (62.10.3.2) is the daughter of Samuel Garver and Catharine (Freed) Garver.  Sarah was born on July 3, 1836 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  On February 16, 1854, Sarah Garver married Joseph Riste and later lived in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Washington.  Joseph and Sarah Riste were the parents of ten children:

JACOB FREED GARVER (62.10.3.3) is the son of Samuel Garver and Catharine (Freed) Garver.  Jacob was born on April 10, 1843 in Tyrone Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  On January 17, 1869, Jacob Garver married Eliza Adelaide Clifford of Lee County, Iowa.  Eliza was born on January 7, 1841 in Rushville, Indiana.  Jacob Garver served in the 45th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was honorably discharged on December 15, 1864.  Jacob and Eliza Garver were the parents of four children:

In 1880, Jacob and Eliza Garver were living in Lee County, Iowa.  Jacob Garver died on June 30, 1899 and Eliza (Clifford) Garver died on May 30, 1925.  Both were buried at the Big Mound Cemetery, Lee County, Iowa.  Herman Garver never married and died on May 19, 1931.  On November 22, 1911, Mark Garver married Ida Weston and they had no children.  Mark Garver died on June 17, 1943.

NEAL BRYANT GARVER (62.10.3.3.3) is the son of Jacob Freed Garver and Eliza Adelaide (Clifford) Garver.  Neal was born on February 17, 1877 in Lee County, Iowa.  On December 10, 1905, Neal Garver married Laura May Scott.  Laura was born on September 22, 1886 in Milbury, Ottawa County, Ohio.  Neal and Laura Garver were the parents of three children:

   Catharine Eliza Garver, b. June 3, 1910, Toledo, Ohio
   Grace Esther Garver, b. August 12, 1918

As of 1952, Neal Garver was living in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Mark Garver married Betty Davidson (born August 31, 1910) and they have one son:  -  Mark Davidson Garver, b. SUSANNAH GARVER (62.10.4) is the daughter of David Garver and Katharine (Stouffer) Garver.  Susannah was born in July of 1814 in Pennsylvania.  On March 13, 1834, Susannah Garver married Alexander M. Armstrong (born 1808 in Pennsylvania) and moved to Iowa in 1857.  Alexander and Susannah Armstrong were the parents six children:

   Cyrus Armstrong, b. August 21, 1839, Pennsylvania
   Lucinda Armstrong, b. November 8, 1841, Pennsylvania

In 1850, Alexander and Susannah Armstrong were living in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  Alexander Armstrong died on August 12, 1851.  In 1857, Susannah (Garver) Armstrong moved to Iowa.  Susannah (Garver) Armstrong died on October 26, 1876.  David Armstrong married Sarah Crooks in Hillsboro, Iowa.  David and Sarah Armstrong had three children:  -  Albert Armstrong,  -  Emmett Armstrong, b. January 3, 1871,  -  Nettie Armstrong, b. April 4, 1880.  David Armstrong died on August 30, 1906.  Emmett Armstrong died on January 22, 1936.  Nettie Armstong married a Mr. Hunter.  Cyrus Armstrong married Ella DeEtta Wright and they had three children:  -  Robert Armstrong,  -  Millard Armstrong,  -  Child (died in infancy).  Cyrus Armstrong died on April 9, 1923.

Lucinda Armstrong married J. W. Williams, a veteran of the Civil War.  J. W. and Lucinda Williams had six children:  -  Benjamin F. Williams, b. February 3, 1869,  -  Cyrus A. Williams, b. ISAAC GARVER (62.14) is the son of Christian Gerber.  Isaac was born on October 10, 1779.  Isaac Garver married Anna Snively.  Anna was born on January 22, 1780 in Pennsylvania and is the daughter of Joseph Snively and Magadalena (Stoner) Snively.  Isaac and Anna Garver were the parents of four children:

   Isaac Garver, Jr. (62.14.4), b. November 12, 1811, Maryland

After the death of his father, Christian Garver, Isaac Garver became the owner of the home farm and established an extensive vineyard, but the venture was not a success.  Isaac resided there until he died on March 12, 1826.  Anna (Snively) Garver died on February 5, 1863.  Both were buried in Welty’s Church Cemetery in Leitersburg.

JOSEPH GARVER (62.14.2) is the son of Isaac Garver and Anna (Snively) Garver.  Joseph was born on June 12, 1803 in Maryland.  Joseph Garver married Mary Holmes (born July 28, 1801).  Joseph and Mary Garver were the parents of six children:

   Isaac Garver, b. 1831, Maryland
   Joseph Garver, Jr., b. 1838, Maryland

From 1850 to 1860, Joseph and Mary Garver were living in Washington County, Maryland.  In 1860, Joseph’s mother, Anna (Snively) Garver, was living with Joseph and Mary Garver.  Mary (Holmes) Garver died on August 27, 1869 and Joseph Garver died on April 24, 1870.  John Garver married Eliza Hiteshew.   Isaac Garver died in Kansas City.  Ann Rebecca Garver married William Hiteshew.  Daniel Garver married Lillia Stouffer.  Joseph Garver, Jr. died unmarried.  Samuel Garver died unmarried.

Benjamin Garver, Jr. married Ann Maria Bell and they had five children:  -  Charles Garver,  -  William Harvey Garver,  -  Carrie Garver,  -  Emma Garver,  -  Edith Garver.  Benjamin Garver, Jr. died on February 5, 1915.  Charles Garver lived in Pasadena, California.  William, Carrie, Emma and Edith Garver live in Missouri.  Daniel Garver died unmarried on February 13, 1890 and was buried in Welty’s Church Cemetery.  Cyrus Garver died unmarried on April 26, 1840 and was buried in Welty’s Church Cemetery.

JACOB GARVER (62.15) is the son of Christian Gerber.  Jacob was born on February 20, 1782 in Maryland.  Jacob Garver was engaged in farming for twenty-five years near Martin’s school house.  He also conducted a store at Chewsville, a hotel at Leitersburg and a tannery at Cavetown.  Jacob was the first toll collector at gate number 2 on the Hagerstown and Waynesboro turnpike.  Jacob Garver married Nancy Hogans and after her death, married a second time to Mrs. Elizabeth (Justice) Smith (born 1806 in Maryland).  Jacob Garver was the father of nineteen children of which five are known:

   Martha J. Garver
   Jane Garver, b. 1839, Maryland
   Eliza A. Garver, b. 1842, Maryland
   Daniel H. Garver, b. 1844, Maryland

In 1850, Jacob and Elizabeth Garver were living in Washington County, Maryland.  Jacob’s occupation was listed as Gatekeeper.  Jacob Garver died on October 4, 1859.  After Jacob’s death, his widow became the toll collector at gate number 2.  Mary Garver married a Mr. Stephy and lived in the Leitersburg District.  Martha Garver married a Mr. Stoner and lived in the Leitersburg District.  Eliza Garver later became the toll collector for gate number 2 of the Hagerstown and Waynesboro turnpike.

LEONARD GARVER (62.18) is the son of Christian Gerber.  Leonard was born in 1789.  On March 17, 1809, Leonard Garver married Catherine Fisher in Butler County, Ohio.  Leonard and Catherine Garver were the parents of four children:

JOHN GARVER (62.18.4) is the son of Leonard Garver and Catherine (Fisher) Garver.  John was born in 1818 in Ohio.  On September 17, 1848, John Garver married Mary Jane White (born July 23, 1828 in Butler County, Ohio).  John and Mary Garver were the parents of eight children:
