ALFRED W. ARRINGTON (32.1) is the son of John Arrington and Sophia Arrington.  Alfred was born on September 17, 1810 in Iredell County, North Carolina.  There is reasonable doubt that Alfred may not be the son of John and Sophia Arrington.  Without any doubt, Alfred Arrington was a very colorful individual for his time.  He was a minister, attorney, member of a legislature, judge and author of novels and poetry.  His life was surrounded by controversy as he was expelled from his ministry, accused of adultry, challenged attorneys and newspaper editors to duels, led mob actions when he thought injustice was prevailing and numerous other incidents.  After being a Methodist minister twice, he converted to the Catholic faith shortly before his death.  He lived in North Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Indiana, Louisiana, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts and died in Chicago, Illinois.  He made the acquaintance of several literary celebrities, including Henry Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson.  He even wrote a welcoming speech for General Sherman when he visited Chicago (Sherman was a friend of Arrington’s second wifes family.)  He practiced many types of law:  he sucessfully prosecuted a man accused of assisting the escape of slave in 1860 in Chicago;   he defended a minister in Illinois who was seeking a divorce (both husband and wife had hired detectives) and the case became a melodrama that was highly publicized;  two years after several men were hung for murder without trial, Arringtion attempted to prosecute others which eventually led to mob action in Fayetteville, Arkansas;  and he was offered a military escort for his rounds of his circuit when he was district judge for several West Texas counties.
