JOHN A. TUCKER (11)

John Tucker is the oldest known Tucker ancestor of the authors.  According to Sibyl Carter, John’s middle name was Abraham.  John was born in 1809.  The 1860 census states that he was born in Tennessee and the 1880 census shows that his children’s father were born in Kentucky.  John Tucker married Lucinda Arrington (33), daughter of John Arrington and Sophia Arrington.  For additional information on the Arrington line, see the sketch of John Arrington (31).  The 1850 and 1860 censuses of Madison County, Arkansas clearly establish that John A. Tucker married a woman whose first name was Lucinda (born 1813 to 1815 in North Carolina).  Lucinda’s maiden name is confirmed by the Certificate of Death of David M. Tucker (Lucinda’s son) which states that the maiden name of David’s mother was Errington.  Lucindas maiden name is again verified by a pension application of Lucinda’s sister, Nancy (Arrington) Steele.  Lucinda Tucker stated that she was 72 years old making her born around 1816 and that her sister Nancy Arrington was married to George W. Steele.  In 1840, John and Lucinda Tucker were living in Franklin County, Arkansas.  From 1850 to 1860, John and Lucinda Tucker were living in Madison County, Arkansas.  John and Lucinda Tucker were the parents of at least eleven children:

  Salinda Tucker (11.1), b. November, 1834, Arkansas
  Robert S. Tucker (11.2), b. May 12, 1836, Arkansas
  Alfred Tucker, b. 1839, Arkansas
  John Tucker (11.4), b. January, 1842, Arkansas
  Mary M. Tucker (11.5), b. November 16, 1844, Arkansas
  Nancy Tucker, b. 1847, Arkansas
  David M. Tucker (11.7), b. August 8, 1849, Arkansas
James Tucker, b. 1853, Madison County, Arkansas
Louisa Jane Tucker, b. 1856, Madison County, Arkansas
Elizabeth Ellen Tucker (11.10), b. February 16, 1857, Madison County, Arkansas
Annette Tucker (12), b. November 12, 1861, Madison County, Arkansas

Important facts concerning the death of John A. Tucker are included an affidavit of Susan L. Tucker (wife of Robert S. Tucker, John’s son) that was found in the pension application for Sarah Burk, widow of Joseph Burk.  It states:  “That we saw the said Joseph Burk often;  he was killed and was at his burying and that he was killed by a company or squad of Rebels on the 6th day of Sept. 1864 on Kings River in the County of Madison and State of Arkansas;  that the said Susan L. Tucker help to wash and dress the said Burk when he was a corpes and noticed that he had been shot;  she did not see the shooting but heard the report of the guns and said the squad of men leaving the place where said soldier was shot or near the place that she saw him in an house often (where) he was shot;  they said neighbors to the said Burk (that) he was with a squad of said Bivens Company at the time he was shot as we understood.”  She further states that the said neighbors is in the same settlement with Joseph Burk in his lifetime and we knew of our own personal knowledge that he and Sarah Burk lived together as husband and wife and it was so understood by all the neighbors that they were husband and wife and we knew them to lived together for several years and of to the time of his death as such husband (and) wife.

MASTER PUBLICATION  3-231

Numerous descendants of John A. Tucker state that Joseph Burk and John Tucker were not only killed at the same time but were also buried together.  In the book, Fading memories, a descendant, Sam Steele (1897 - 1989), states:  “My mother was a Burks, Mary Burks.  Her dad, my mothers dad, got killed by bushwhackers, him and another feller, Joe Burks and John Tucker.  They shot em offa their horses up there on Kings River.  They had been to Kingston, them and their boys, and started back home.  And them boys wanted to go to some house over there and rob some bee hives somebody had.  The men told them they wasnt going to have nothin to do with it;  theyd just go on home.  So, they got over on Kings River and the bushwahackers was layin and waitin for em and shot them both off their horses.  The boys, I dont know whether they robbed the bees or not, but they went on home;  and the women, they had to go and build a rail fence around em (the mens bodies) that night to keep the hogs off of them.  So they had to go bury em the women did.  The boys was afraid to get around close, afraid theyd (bushwhackers) get them, you know.  They took a yoke of oxen and hauled em up there to the Bollingers settlement.  Theres a little cemetery there, and they dug a grave and buried them both in the same grave.  They just put em down in there.  Nobody never had put em up a head rock, till me and my sister and one of my cousins, Howie Burks from Springdale, bought one.  But we didnt know what to put on it, didnt have no dates and so on, so we set it up over there and put on it, Killed by bushwhackers and buried by their women.”

There appear to be as many variations of this account as there are descendants researching the Tucker and Burk lines.  Sibyl (Holt) Carter, Bobbie Jean (Rachels) Zylstra, Joy Russell and John D. Little have all presented different variations of this event but all have the common theme of John Tucker and Joseph Burk being killed by either Confederate troops or bushwhackers.

Census records confirm that John A. Tucker died during the 1860s and most likely during the Civil War.  John A. Tucker died between 1860 and 1870 as Lucinda was living alone in 1870.  According to Sarah (Felkins) Burks pension application, Joseph Burk died on September 6, 1864 and it could be concluded that John A. Tucker died on that same day.  For over a century their grave had no tombstone but recently several descendants erected a granite tombstone that states:  “Burk & Tucker;  Bushwhacked in the Civil War;  Buried by their women.”  This tombstone is located in the Bolinger Cemetery located about ten miles south of Kingston in Madison County, Arkansas.  From 1870 to 1880, Lucinda Tucker was living in Madison County, Arkansas.
