It is estimated that around sixty percent of the descendants of John Shears Olliff have remained in Georgia.  These numbers include census records of the descendants of Williamson Brooks and Susannah (Olliff) Brooks.  Most of the descendants of Susannah (Olliff) Brooks settled in Texas and Oklahoma.  Around twenty-five percent of the descendants surveyed were descendants of Susannah (Olliff) Brooks.  The descendants with the surname of Olliff have been more thoroughly researched as well as Georgia has been more thoroughly researched than other states.  Florida, Louisiana and Alabama probably have another ten percent of the descendants of John Shears Olliff.  The remaining five percent of John’s descendants can be found primarily in other southern states and other western states.

The extraction of census records has played a major role in the compilation of this book.  It is estimated that at least ten percent of descendants of John Shears Olliff are established by census records alone.  Another ten percent were located because of the information provided by census records.  It is estimated that eighty percent of the census records (for 1880 and earlier) for descendants of John Shears Olliff have been extracted which provide primary source documentation for establishing proof of lineage.  It is estimated that fifty percent of the 1900 and thirty percent of the 1910 have been abstracted and only fifteen percent of the 1920 have been abstracted.  These percentages will continue to increase as new cousins send in information allowing verification by census records which would not be possible by census research alone.  Additionally, better access to soundex census microfilm rolls would allow more thorough extraction of census records.  With the availability of the 1920 census, several hundred more descendants could be uncovered by additional census research.

The four following tables track the number of descendants of John Shears Olliff that were born during the first four generations.  There were a total of 895 descendants compiled during the first four generations and it is estimated that there were actually 1,281 descendants.  Most of the missing descendants, 314 individuals, were primarily from the two daughters of John Shears Olliff that have not been located to date.  Excluding descendants of these two daughters, it is estimated that over ninety percent of the descendants of have been compiled for the first four generations.

The following two tables are summaries of the estimated seven generations that have occured since the marriage of John Shears Olliff to Johannah Jackson.  The average number of offspring per generation has varied widely from a low of 3.6 children per generation to a high of 10.7 children per generation.  The length of time between generation has been very consistent with a low of 31 years and high of 34 years between generations.  It was estimated that the total number of descendants of John Shears Olliff currently stands at around 27,864 individuals and with most of them, 25,113 individuals, still living today - that’s ninety percent of all descendants.

*   Only half of the seventh generation has been born to date.  The actual number will eventually be 25,726.  It is assumed that each generation is born during a twenty year period around this date.

The seventh generation will eventually result in around 25,726 additional descendants of John Shears Olliff.  Assuming that the Olliff line will average 2.2 children per descendant, this would result in another 56,597 descendants during the eighth generation.  These are averages only, as there are already members of the ninth generation being born as well as members of the sixth generation (Sylvester Brooks line) are still being born.

Over the next generation, around 33 years, the remaining half of the seventh generation will be born and the first half of the eighth generation will be born.  Around half of the seventh generation still has not been born yet - 12,863 individuals.  By the end of the next generation over half of the ninth generation will be born - 28,299 individuals.  This results in around 41,162 descendants that could be added to the Olliff family tree over the next generation - 33 years.  This is an average of around 1,247 new descendants per year over the next generation.  The current rate is around 1,000 individuals per year and by the end of the ninth generation, it would be up to 1,500 individuals per year.  Obviously, a complete genealogy of the Olliff line is rapidly becoming impossible to compile into a complete record.

It is estimated that almost 3,000 “descendants” of John Shears Olliff have been compiled with this book and “Brooks Family History.”  It is also estimated that this represents only ten percent of the actual 30,000 estimated descendants of John Shears Olliff.  From 1982 to 1992, the authors have added only 2,000 descendants to the approximately 1,000 descendants already compiled by Martin T. Olliff, Jr.  Only two years of descendants were added during a ten year period - and well over a third of these descendants were from Susannah (Olliff) Brooks which was compiled from 1976 to 1982.

The list on the following page is a summary of the number of descendants of John Shears Olliff which is summarized by each of his grandchildren and those great-grandchildren that have over fifty relatives.  This list was extracted from the text of this book and the text of the 1982 book, “Brooks Family History.”  There at least another 300 descendants of Williamson Brooks and Susannah (Olliff) Brooks that have not been compiled over the last ten years.  Please note that all numbers include step children, adopted children, spouses and parents of spouses.  From this summary, children of John Shears Olliff, have the following distribution by line:  Joseph Olliff (1.4) - 42.4 percent, Benjamin Olliff (1.3) - 26.9 percent, Susannah (Olliff) Brooks (1.5) - 21.6 percent, John Olliff (1.2) - 9.1 percent.  There are 166 known great grandchildren of John Shears Olliff.  Assuming an even distribution of descendants from these great grandchildren yields percentages that are close to actual numbers that have been compiled:  Joseph Olliff (1.4) - 37.3 percent, Benjamin Olliff (1.3) - 22.9 percent, Susannah (Olliff) Brooks (1.5) - 30.7 percent, John Olliff (1.2) - 9.1 percent.
