JAMES CASEY (8.6)

There is a reasonable possibility that James Casey (born 1795) is related to the authors ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Both were known to have resided in McMinn County, Tennessee in the early 1800s.  This section is included in hope of some day proving a connection between these two Casey lines as well as sort out the various Casey lines to better understand how many Casey lines that originated from Roane County, Tennessee.  It is believed that the James Casey that lived in Rhea County, Tennessee, McMinn County, Tennessee and later his family lived in Wright County, Missouri.

The heirs of James Casey received a land grant in McMinn County, Tennessee that was issued February 3, 1839.  This land grant implies that James Casey was married to woman named Elizabeth as the land grant states:  Elizabeth Casey, widow of James Casey, deceased, her dower.  This grant implies that James and Elizabeth Casey were the parents of eight children:

  William Casey
  John Casey, b. 1812
  James W. Casey (8.6.3), b. 1815, Tennessee
  Nancy Casey
  Elizabeth Casey, b. 1818
  Sarah Casey
  Sterling Casey, b. 1824, Tennessee
  Samuel Henry Casey (8.6.8), b. 1825, Tennessee

Elizabeth Casey (wife of James Casey) apparently married another time to a Mr. Lewis sometime before 1839.  On December 18, 1834, John Casey married Jane Askins in Rhea County, Tennessee.  On September 12, 1830, Nancy Casey married Benjamin McKenzie in Rhea County, Tennessee.  On January 26, 1835, Elizabeth Casey married George Watson in Rhea County, Tennessee.  In 1852, George and Elizabeth Watson were divorced.  Before 1839, Sarah Casey married a Mr. Ruse.  In 1850, Sterling Casey and his brother, Samuel Casey, were living in Wright County, Missouri.  Sterling Casey married Frances (Cobb) Murrell in Wright County, Missouri.  In 1860, Sterling Casey was living in Wright County, Missouri.  Sterling Casey died in 1866 near Hartville in Wright County, Missouri.

There is evidence that a James Casey also lived in nearby Rhea County, Tennessee.  Since some of the children mentioned above were married in Rhea County, Tennessee, it is likely that most or all references of James Casey in Rhea County are probably the same man.  See the sketch of James Casey (7.1) found in the section on Rhea County, Tennessee Caseys for additional information on the James Casey that lived in Rhea County, Tennessee.

CHILDREN OF EASTER CASEY (8.7)

There is a reasonable possibility that the children of Easter Casey (wife of unknown male Casey) (born 1820 in Tennessee) is related to the authors ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Easter Casey and her children are known to have resided in several of the same counties in Arkansas where Amblers descendants resided.  This section is included in hope of some day proving a connection between these two Casey lines as well as sort out the various Casey lines to better understand how many Casey lines that resided in Arkansas that could be related to Ambler Casey.

In 1850, Easter Casey (born 1820 in Tennessee) was living with four of her children in Franklin County, Arkansas.  Therefore, Easter Casey was the mother of at least four children:

  William (E.) Casey (8.7.1), b. 1838, Arkansas
  Elizabeth F. Casey, b. 1840, Arkansas
  (Abner) Tipton Casey (8.7.3), b. January 15, 1841, Arkansas
  Sarah Casey, b. 1843, Arkansas

There are many family traditions that tie Abner Tipton Casey to the line of Abner Casey (8.3) and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey.  According to Harold Dean Casey, the daughter of Abner Tipton Casey, Geneva Casey, married John Logan Rennels and that John Rennels’ sister, Mahala Rennels, married Geneva Casey’s uncle Wade Hampton Casey.  Wade is the son of Jesse Tipton Casey and grandson of Abner Casey (8.3) and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey.  Children of Abner Tipton Casey and descendants of Abner Casey (8.3) lived in Wise County, Texas.  Family tradition states that Henrietta Netherton’s sister, Jennie Netherton married Jesse Casey (8.3.9), son of Abner Casey (8.3) and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey.

There is also a reasonable possibility that Easter Casey was married to Johnson Casey, son of Abner Casey (8.3) and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey.  Johnson Casey was listed in the 1840 census of Johnson County, Arkansas.  The ages of children match quite well with those found in the 1850 census of Franklin County, Arkansas.  Also, William E. Casey had a son named Johnson L. Casey and Abner Tipton Casey had a son named Mose Johnson Casey.  This connection would further be strengthened by Netherton to Casey marriages and would support Wade Hampton Casey being related to Abner Tipton Casey.

CHILDREN OF SUSAN (CASEY) DOTSON (8.8)

It is known that Susan Casey (born 1821 in Tennessee) married Edmond Dotson in McMinn County, Tennessee on February 13, 1840.  Edmond was born on October 13, 1814 in Tennessee and is the son of William Abraham “Bart” Dotson and Elizabeth A. (Raynor) Dotson.  It is known that Ambler Casey lived there in the same timeframe and that Ambler Casey had daughters that were born when Susan Casey was born, therefore, there is a reasonable possibility that Susan could be a daughter of Ambler Casey.  Susan (Casey) Dotson also moved to Madison County, Arkansas about the same time that two of Ambler Casey’s sons (John Casey and Ellison Casey) moved to Madison County, Arkansas.  Susan later lived in Newton County, Arkansas where many descendants of Ambler Casey (1) resided.  Since there are several other Casey families living in McMinn County, Tennessee during the same timeframe, this connection is considered highly speculative.  Edmond and Susan Dotson were the parents of eight children:

  Nancy Dotson, b. 1840, Tennessee

AMBLER CASEY (8.9)

There is a reasonable chance that Ambler Casey (born 1832 Tennessee) is related to the author’s oldest proven ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  According to Dianna Richardson, Ambler Casey was born in 1834 in McMinn County, Tennessee.  If Ambler Casey (born 1832) can be tied to McMinn County in Tennessee, then there would be a reasonable chance that Ambler Casey (born 1832) could be one of the sons that Ambler Casey (born 1790) is known to have as implied in the 1830 and 1840 census records of McMinn County, Tennessee.  In 1850, Ambler Casey (born 1832 in Tennessee) and Rutha Casey (born 1829 in Tennessee) were living in Fulton County, Arkansas.  Rutha was either the first wife of Ambler Casey, possibly the same woman as Elizabeth Casey that later lived with Ambler Casey (maybe Elizabeth was her middle name that she later preferred) or possibly a sister of Ambler Casey (born 1832).  In 1860, Ambler Casey and his wife, Elizabeth Casey (born 1826 in Tennessee) was living in Fulton County, Tennessee.  The 1860 and 1870 census of Fulton County, Arkansas clearly show that Ambler and Elizabeth Casey were the parents of at least three daughters:

Louisa Casey, b. 1854, Fulton County, Arkansas
Pernetta Casey (8.9.2), b. February, 1858, Fulton County, Arkansas
Mary Casey, b. 1860, Fulton County, Arkansas

According to Dianna Richardson, “Ambler Casey had a brother, Jesse Casey (born 1828 in Tennessee), that married Elizabeth Talburt in 1850.  Jesse Casey (born 1828) died in 1868.  After Jesse Casey died, Ambler Casey (born 1832) ran off with Jesse Casey’s widow, leaving his wife (also named Elizabeth) and their three daughters.  Ambler and Elizabeth Casey moved to Scott County, Arkansas where they had one daughter, Joanna Casey (born 1870).  Ambler Casey’s previous wife, Elizabeth Casey, is believed to have later married Jack Clinkengbeard on November 19, 1889 in Baxter County, Arkansas.”  Ambler and Elizabeth Casey (nee Talburt) were the parents of one daughter:

PERNETTA CASEY (8.9.2) is the daughter of Ambler Casey and Elizabeth Casey.  Pernetta was born in February, 1858 in Fulton County, Arkansas.  On January 1, 1878, Pernetta Casey married William Alfred Cockrum in Ozark County, Missouri.  William was born on March 5, 1853 in Custer, Arkansas.  William and Pernetta Cockrum were the parents of at least one son:

  William Duncan Cockrum

William D. Cockrum had at least one son:  -  Grover Cockrum, b. December 11, 1916, Custer, Arkansas.  Grover Cockrum had at least one daughter:  -  Dianna Cockrum, b. Harrison, Arkansas.  Dianna Richardson married a Mr. Richardson.  As of 2001, Dianna (Cockrum) Richardson was living in Liberty, Missouri.

JESSE CASEY (8.10)

There is a reasonable chance that Jesse Casey (born 1828 in Tennessee) is related to the author’s oldest proven ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Descedants of Ambler Casey (8.9), believe that Jesse Casey (born 1828) is the brother of Ambler Casey (8.9) and there is evidence that supports this connection.  Both Ambler and Jesse Casey resided in Fulton County, Arkansas in 1850 and 1860.  It also appears that Ambler Casey married Jesse Casey’s widow, leaving his wife and three daughters.  In 1850, Jesse Casey (born 1828 in Arkansas) was living in Fulton County, Arkansas.  According to Dianna Richardson, “Jesse Casey married Elizabeth Talburt on February 17, 1850.  Elizabeth was born in February, 1829 in Fulton County, Arkansas and is the daughter of Walter Talburt and Mary (Hightower) Talburt.  Jesse and Elizabeth Casey had six children but that only two lived.”  In 1860, Jesse and Elizabeth Casey were living in Fulton County, Arkansas.  Jesse and Elizabeth Casey were the parents of at least five children (1860, 1870  and 1880 census records):

Walter Casey, b. 1852, Fulton County, Arkansas
John Casey, b. 1853, Fulton County, Arkansas
Son (name unknown), b. 1860, Fulton County, Arkansas
  Jesse Casey, b. 1862, Arkansas
  Elbert Casey, b. 1864, Arkansas

MASTER PUBLICATION  2-247

According to Dianna Richardson, “Jesse Casey had a brother, Ambler Casey (born 1832 in Tennessee).  Jesse Casey (born 1828) died on March 28, 1868. Ambler Casey’s previous wife, Elizabeth Casey, is believed to have later married Jack Clinkengbeard on November 19, 1889 in Baxter County, Arkansas.”  The 1870 census records tend to support these connections.  In 1870, there is a Elizabeth Casey (born 1829 in Tennessee) living as a single parent in Fulton County, Arkansas with her daughters, Louisa Casey (born 1854) and Netta Casey (born 1858).  These daughters are also listed in the 1860 census where both Ambler Casey and Elizabeth Casey are shown as parents.  These census records clearly imply that either Ambler Casey died between 1860 and 1870 or left his wife and children during that timeframe (this matches Dianna Richardson’s scenario).
