WINIFRED BROOKS (1.5) is the daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  According to Ella Kelley, “Winnefred” was born on September 7, 1748 and married James Butler in 1766.  James and Winifred Butler were the parents of at least nine children:

James Butler served in the Revolutionary War and was paid for his militia duty.  Issued July 9, 1785 to James Butler, Sr. and James Butler, Jr. for 39 pounds, 16 shillings and 5 pence.  Interest collected was 2 pounds, 15 shillings and 8 pence.  Also issued on July 9, 1785 to James Butler for 4 pounds with interest of 5 shillings and 7 pence.  These stub entries to indents were claims against the state of South Carolina, recorded in Book U, Pages 220 and 221.  According to History of Edgefield County, South Carolina, “James Butler, son of James Butler and of Mary his wife was born on March 2, 1761.  Both James, Sr. and Jr. were killed in 1781 by Tories.”  Their relationship, if any, to Winnifred Brooks is not known.  On May 11, 1804, Winifred Butler is listed in the will of her father, Robert Brooks, Sr.  On January 1, 1807, “James Butler and wife Winifred” were involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia concerning the division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Winifred’s father.  On October 9, 1809, “Winny Brooks who married James Butler” was involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Robert’s second wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her step-children for allotment of her widow’s dower.

James Butler died around 1811 as his will was proven in Edgefield County, South Carolina court on June 7, 1811 (Book A, Page 298).  On April 6, 1819, Winifred Butler of Edgefield District, South Carolina appointed her brother-in-law, David Thomas, of Brunswick County, Virginia “my lawful attorney to sue for and execute a bill of sale of a negro which fell to my share of the estate of her father.”  In 1830, “Winifred” Butler was living with one daughter (born 1800 to 1810) in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  Abstracts of Wills of Edgefield County, South Carolina, contains a will of Winnefrey Butler, “widow of James Butler,” which was signed on November 21, 1823 and proven on February 11, 1831.  This will indicates that Winifred (Brooks) Butler died around 1831.

Rebeccah Butler married Hugh Ballentine and they had at least one daughter:  -  Frances Ann Ballentine.  In 1811, Hugh Ballentine was qualified as administrator for the will of James Butler in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  Hugh and Rebeccah Ballentine did not leave any heirs (it is assumed that Frances died without issue).  Patsy Butler married Edward Moseley and they had at least one son:  -  A. W. Moseley.  A. W. Moseley married R. McLemoer and they had at least one son:  -  A. M. Moseley.  A. M. Mosely married M. S. Canady and they had at least one son:  -  F. M. Moseley.  F. M. Moseley married Lelia Shackleford and they had at least one son:  -  Franklin S. Moseley.  Reverend Franklin S. Moseley lived in Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama at one time.

Polly Butler married Christopher Shaw.  According to the will of James Butler, Sr., James Butler, Jr. died prior to 1811.  Thomas Butler married Aletia Roby Barnes.  Thomas Butler married a second time to Letlia Boyd who was a widow.  Robert Butler married Matilda Cooper.  Ann Butler married Henry Waldrum and they had seven children:  -  Henry Waldrum,  -  John Waldrum,  -  Elizabeth Waldrum who married Benjamin Addison,  -  Matilda Waldrum,  -  Mary Waldrum,  -  William Waldrum who married Eliza Crafton,  -  Charlsie Waldrum who married James Armstrong.  Matilda Waldrum married Joseph R. Addison and they had one daughter:  -  Mary Addison.  Matilda married a second time to Wiley Glover and a third time to a Mr. Gaskins.  Mary Addison married John Elbert Doby.  Mary married a second time to a Mr. Timmerman.  Mary Waldrum married Charles Limbecker and later married a second time to Johnathan Johnson.

JOHN BUTLER (1.5.4) is the son of James Butler and Winifred (Brooks) Butler.  In 1808, John Butler married Elizabeth Cleckler (or Cleckley).  Elizabeth is the daughter of John Cleckler and Mary (Fudge) Cleckler.  In 1811, John Butler was qualified as an administrator of the will of his father, James Butler, in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  In 1831, John Butler received all real and personal property of his deceased mother, Winifred Butler, in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  John and Elizabeth Butler were the parents of seven children:

Butler died in 1888 and Mary Ann Catherine (Hall) Butler died in 1883.  On October 22, 1866, Frances Julia Butler married Henry Getzen in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  Mattie Catherine Butler married W. E. Mealing.  Katherine G. Mealing of Augusta, Georgia is a descendant of W. E. and Mattie Mealing.  Thomas Butler married Fannie Rountree.

WILLIAM HARRISON H. BUTLER (1.5.4.4.2) is the son of Robert J. Butler and Mary Ann Catherine (Hall) Butler.  Harrison was born in 1841 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  On September 18, 1864, Harrison Butler married Frances Ann “Fannie” Miller (born 1845) in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  Harrison and Fannie Butler were the parents of at least three children:

  Mamie Butler, b. 1867, Edgefield County, South Carolina
  Sarah E. Butler, b. 1868, Edgefield County, South Carolina
  Robbie Sofia Butler, b. 1871, Shultz, South Carolina

In 1880, William and Frances Butler were living in Aiken County, South Carolina.  Frances Ann (Miller) Butler died in 1893 and Harrison Butler died in 1901.  Robbie Butler married Albert S. J. Miller.  Robbie (Butler) Miller became a D. A. R. member (88702) on the service of James Butler, father of James Butler who married Winifred Brooks.

ANTHONY BUTLER (1.5.5) is the son of James Butler and Winifred (Brooks) Butler.  Anthony Butler married Cary Livingston Howard and they were the parents of at least one son:

According to the will of James Butler, Anthony Butler died prior to 1811.  Mary Lee (Glover) Buckhalter of Louisville, Georgia is a descendant of Anthony and Cary Butler.  Mary Lee gained membership in the D. A. R. (member 261648) on the service of James Butler (husband of Winifred).

SETH BUTLER (1.5.5.1) is the son of Anthony Butler and Cary Livingston (Howard) Butler.  Seth was born in 1795 in South Carolina.  On December 18, 1817, Seth Butler married Catherine Maria Day in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  Catherine was born on January 6, 1800 in Edgefield County, South Carolina and is the daughter of John Day and Elizabeth Day.  Seth and Catherine Butler were the parents of at least two sons:

SARAH BROOKS (1.6) is the daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  In 1804, Sarah White was listed in her father’s will in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  On January 1, 1807, “the heirs of Sarah White, deceased” were involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia concerning the division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Mary’s father.  On October 9, 1809, “the children of Blumer White who married another daughter of now deceased,” was involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Robert’s second wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her step-children for allotment of her widow’s dower.  According to these suits, it is obvious that Sarah (Brooks) White died between 1804 and 1807 and left children.

There are many references to Blumer White’s who lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina which are very likely the husband of Sarah (Brooks) White.  The 1810 and 1820 census records enumerate Blumer White in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  A will of Blumer White was signed on October 28, 1824 and was probated on March 14, 1825 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  The will lists wife:  Joannah;  sons:  Blumer, Daniel, Abner, Jonathan;  daughters:  Rebecca, Sarah, Tabitha, Martha;  heirs of deceased children:  Stephen White, John White, Dolanlum (?) White, Elizabeth Harrison (all deceased).  In 1840, another will of a Blumer White was probated in Edgfield County, South Carolina.  It is likely that this was the son of Blumer White whose will was probated in 1825 listing a son:  Blumer.

WILLIAM BROOKS (1.7) is the son of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  William Brooks was was not listed in any of the Mecklenburg County, Virginia personal property tax lists from 1782 to 1812, indicating that William probably moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  William Brooks is listed in the 1782 census of Mecklenburg County with six whites listed in his household.  William Brooks was also listed in the 1790 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina.  William Brooks was listed in the 1800 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina.  On March 13, 1809, Robert Brooks of Edgefield County, South Carolina appointed his uncle, David Thomas, to collect the share for “my brothers and sisters,” one-eighth part due “our father William Brooks.”  William Brooks was the father of at least one son:

  Robert Brooks

William Brooks was listed in his father’s dated May 11, 1804.  On January 1, 1807, Ebenezer McGowan, the representative of Wade Brooks and William Brooks, which were two sons and legatees of Robert Brooks, deceased, and the heirs of Sarah White, deceased, filed suit for division of the slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, deceased.  It appears from this suit that William Brooks must have died between 1805 and 1807.  On October 9, 1809, “the children of William Brooks” were involved in a second suit for the allotment of the widow’s dower.

WADE BROOKS (1.8) is the son of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  Apparently Wade Brooks either lived or owned land in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and the neighboring county, Warren County, North Carolina.  Wade Brooks first married in 1782, therefore, Wade was probably born in the early 1760’s.  Wade Brooks first married Sarah Beasley.  This marriage is indicated by a marriage bond of Warren County, North Carolina, dated August 13, 1782.  According to Leonard McCown, Sarah is the daughter of John Pitts Beasley and his wife, Elizabeth Beasley.  This connection is verified as the 1805 division of property of the estate of John P. Beasley, indicates land being inherited by heirs of Wade Brooks.

Wade Brooks was listed in the Mecklenburg County personal property tax lists for at least the following years:  1790, 1791, 1797 and 1799 to 1805.  In 1805, listed with Wade was his son:  Robert Brooks.  In 1815, Wade Brooks had died and the heirs of Wade Brooks were listed in the sale of land in Warren County, North Carolina that part of the estate of Elizabeth’s father, John Pitts Beasley.  Wade and Sarah Brooks were the parents of four children:

  Robert Brooks, b. Mid 1780’s
  Alsy Brooks
  Patsy Brooks
  Elizabeth Brooks

Wade Brooks appeared to have married a second time to Tabitha Jones on January 9, 1796 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  It appears that Wade Brooks married a third time to Elizabeth Carol.  This marriage was derived from marriage bond of Warren County, North Carolina, dated April 14, 1802.  James Beasley was bondsman and witness and Gideon Johnson was a witness.

Wade Brooks was listed in his father’s will dated May 11, 1804.  Not only was Wade given one-eighth of his father’s estate, but Robert Brooks left the “home plantation and land that I bought of Hicks Ellis left to wife Abigail Brooks for her natural life and then to grandson Robert Brooks, son of Wade Brooks.”  Wade Brooks died prior to December 26, 1805 when the division of property of John Beasley was recorded in Warren County, North Carolina.  This division of property lists “the heirs of Wade Brooks, decd.”  This would imply that Wade Brooks died in either 1804 or 1805.

On January 1, 1807, Ebenezer McGowan, the representative of Wade Brooks and William Brooks, which were two sons and legatees of Robert Brooks, deceased, and the heirs of Sarah White, deceased, filed suit for division of the slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, deceased.  On October 9, 1809, “the children of Wade Brooks” were involved in a second suit for the allotment of the widow’s dower.  The 1815 Warren County, North Carolina deed clearly shows that Elizabeth Brooks married Allen Burton.  According to Leonard MCown, Alsy Brooks married Thomas Cannon.

REBECCA BROOKS (1.9) is the daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  On December 24, 1790, Rebecca Brooks married David Winn Thomas in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  David was born in the 1760s and is the son of Peter Thomas (born 1734 in Virginia).  On May 11, 1804, “Rebekah” Thomas is listed in the will of her father, Robert Brooks, Sr.  On January 1, 1807, “David Thomas and wife Rebecca” were involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia concerning the division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Rebecca’s father.  On January 12, 1809, Robert Brooks of Edgefield District, South Carolina (son of William Brooks and grandson of Robert Brooks, Sr.) appointed David Thomas of Brunswick County, Virginia “my lawful attorney to sue for, collect and receive” his respective share and that of his brothers and sisters.  On October 9, 1809, “Rebecca Brooks who married David Thomas” was involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Robert’s second wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her step-children for allotment of her widow’s dower.

On April 6, 1819, Winifred (Brooks) Butler of Edgefield District, South Carolina (daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr.) appointed David Thomas of Brunswick County, Virginia “my lawful attorney to sue for and execute a bill of sale of a negro which fell to my share of the estate of her father.”  The children as well as death dates of David and Rebecca Thomas are currently not known.  David and Rebecca Thomas were the parents of eight children:

ROBERT W. THOMAS (1.9.1) is the son of David Winn Thomas and Rebecca (Brooks) Thomas.  Robert was born in 1793 in Virginia.  Robert W. Thomas married his first cousin, Rebecca Jones (1.4.6).  Robert and Rebecca Thomas were the parents of at least four children:

MARY E. THOMAS (1.9.1.1) is the daughter of Robert W. Thomas and Rebecca (Jones) Thomas.  Mary was born on December 27, 1827 in Virginia.  On September 13, 1844, Mary Thomas married David Redout (born January 9, 1820 in Virginia).  David and Mary Redout were the parents of six children:

  Julia A. Redout, b. April 28, 1848, Virginia
  Robert T. Redout, b. January 17, 1849, Virginia
  James D. Redout, b. January 16, 1851, Virginia
  Anna Caroline Redout, b. January 9, 1853, Virginia

Mary (Thomas) Redout died on August 19, 1868.  In 1870, David and Rebecca “Ridout” were living in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  David Redout died in 1876.
