THEDE, AUBIL, STEEBY & GARVER FAMILIES  10-37

FATHER OF JACOB AUBIL (11)

According to the newspaper article in the Ohio Democrat and Times, Jacob’s brother, David Aubil, was born in Canton Bern, Switzerland.  It states that “their father, David, Jacob, Michael and Mahala” left their native land in 1834 and started for America.  “The journey began with a stage trip which required 26 days to complete;  then followed 40 days of rolling and tossing on the ocean till they reached New York.  From there the trip to Albany was made on the picturesque Hudson; from Albany to Buffalo by rail, from Buffalo to Cleveland by steamer, and from Cleveland to Massillon by canal.  Here the monotony of travel was changed to the inland use of a one-horse wagon.”  The father of Jacob Aubil was the father of at least four children:

David Aubil (11.1), b. September 18, 1810, Canton of Bern, Switzerland
  Jacob Aubil (12), b. 1815, Switzerland
  Michael Aubil
  Mahala Aubil

The newspaper article does not mention that David’s mother made the trip from Switzerland to United States, therefore, she probably died in Switzerland prior to 1834.  “Shortly after his (David’s first) marriage, the senior Aubil (David’s father) died and was buried at Ragersville, (Ohio).”  Apparently one son became “ill and when they arrived at Shanesville in their wagon he was too ill for them to continue their journey.  Here he died and the father, David, Jacob, Michael, and Mahala were left to found their home in the new world in grief and sorrow.”
