CASEY FAMILY HISTORY  2-277

ELLISON FAMILY HISTORY

Polly Ellison is the oldest known Ellison ancestor of the authors and the only known Ellison relative other than descendants of Polly Ellison and her husband, Ambler Casey (1).  Ambler Casey (1) is the oldest proven Casey ancestor of the authors and well over 1,000 descendants have been compiled to date.  In 1809, Polly Ellison married Ambler Casey in Roane County, Tennessee and they lived in Roane County, Tennessee until 1821.  Ambler and Polly Casey later lived in McMinn County, Tennessee from 1825 to 1840.  Other individuals with the surname of Ellison have been located in Roane County, Tennessee and McMinn County, Tennessee during the same period of time when Ambler Casey and his wife, Polly (Ellison) Casey, resided in these counties.  Therefore, these Ellison individuals are possible relatives of Polly Ellison.  As supporting documentation reveals, the Ellison individuals located are closely tied to the Casey family as many legal documents involved both Ellison and Casey family members.

Ambler and Polly Casey were married in 1809 and assuming Polly was eighteen years of age at the time of her marriage would result in an estimated birthdate of around 1791.  The 1830 Census of McMinn County, Tennessee shows that Ambler Caseys wife (oldest female in the household) was thirty to forty years of age.  This implies that Polly Ellison was born between 1790 and 1800 which supports the estimated birthdate of 1791 (derived from the marriage date).  According to Bill Hensley, Polly Ellison is the daughter of Robert Ellison and that Polly had at least three siblings:  Elizabeth Ellison, Henson Ellison and James Ellison.  All four of the above listed Ellison individuals are known residents of Roane County, Tennessee and McMinn County, Tennessee, but it is not known the source of this information at this time and therefore this information should be considered highly speculative until proven otherwise.  The author of this manuscript has found no evidence that Robert Ellison was the father of these individuals or that Robert Ellison was sufficiently older that the other Ellison individuals such that he could be their father.  This section is included in order to tie these various Ellison individuals into the same family line.

From 1815 to 1818, there is a Robert Ellison listed in several Roane County, Tennesee tax lists.  In 1815, Robert Ellison was listed as owning no land, having one white poll and having no black poll.  In the same list is another Robert Ellison listed as owning no land, having one white poll and having one black poll.  Robert Ellison was listed in Captain Rogers’ list along with Ambler Casey, John Casey and Abner Casey.  In 1816, Robert Ellison is listed in Captain Hembree’s list as owning 100 acres on Caney Creek, having one white poll and having one black poll.  Ambler Casey and John Casey are also listed in Captain Hembree’s list.  In 1816, another Robert Ellison was listed in Captain Nail’s list as owning no land, having no white poll and having one black poll.  In 1817, Robert Ellison was listed in Captain Byrd’s list as owning 110 acres of land, having one white poll and having one black poll.  Another Robert Allison was listed in Captain Waller’s list as owning no land, having one white poll and having one black poll.  In 1817, Ambler Casey was also listed in Captain Byrd’s list.  In 1818, Robert Ellison is listed in Captain Byrd’s list as owning no land, having one white poll and having no black poll.  No Casey individuals were listed in Captain Byrd’s list in 1818.  There are many other references to Robert Allison that could be Robert Ellison as well.

2-278  INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

There are several individuals with the surname of Ellison that resided in Roane County, Tennessee.  Birthdates were estimated based on dates of marriage in most cases.  These Ellison individuals are:

  Polly Ellison, b. ca. 1791
  Elizabeth Ellison (89.1), b. ca. 1793
  Henson Ellison (89.2), b. ca. 1804
  James Ellison (89.3), b. March 7, 1806, Tennessee

ELIZABETH ELLISON (89.1) resided in Roane County, Tennessee and may be related to Polly Ellison who married Ambler Casey (1).  Since Elizabeth married in 1811 and was probably around eighteen years of age at her marriage, Elizabeth’s birthdate would be approximately 1793. On August 1, 1811, Elizabeth Ellison married Thomas Richardson in Roane County, Tennessee.  Thomas Richardson and Ambler Casey signed this marriage bond.  This could be a case where Ambler Casey, signed a marriage bond for a younger sister of his wife, Polly (Ellison) Casey (married in 1809).  Thomas Richardson and Elizabeth Ellison were married in 1811 and assuming Elizabeth was eighteen years of age at the time of her marriage would result in an estimated birthdate of around 1793.

HENSON ELLISON (89.2) resided in Roane County, Tennessee and may be related to Polly Ellison who married Ambler Casey (1).  Since Henson married in 1824 and was probably around twenty years of age at his marriage, Henson’s birthdate would be approximately 1804.  On March 27, 1824, Henson Ellison married Jane Casey in Roane County, Tennessee.  Levi Casey signed as surety.  It is believed that Levi Casey was Jane Casey’s brother.  Both appear to be children of John and Anna Casey.  In 1856, the will of John Casey was proven in Greene County, Missouri.  This will mentions John’s wife, Anna Casey, his daughter, Jane Ellison, and son, Levi Casey.  In 1850, John and Anna Casey were living in Greene County, Missouri.  It is believed that son of John Casey and Anna Casey, Levi Casey, is the Levi Casey that married Polly Haggard in Roane County, Tennessee on February 4, 1830.  Levi and Polly Casey lived in Taney County, Missouri in 1840 and 1860.  For additional information on the descendants of John and Anna Casey, see the sketch on John Casey (8.2).  Henson Ellison and Jane Casey were married in 1824 and assuming Henson was twenty years of age at the time of his marriage would result in an estimated birthdate of around 1804.  On January 16, 1840, Ambler Casey sold land to Henson Ellison in McMinn County, Tennessee.  This land was sold for $900.00 and the deed was witnessed by John Casey.

JAMES ELLISON (89.3) resided in Roane County, Tennessee and may be related to Polly Ellison who married Ambler Casey (1).  Since James married in 1829 and was probably around twenty years of age at his marriage, James’ birthdate would be approximately 1809.  According to Betty Dawson, he was actually born on March 7, 1806 in Tennessee.  On April 16, 1829, James Ellison married Hetty Casey in Roane County, Tennessee.  Because Hetty married in 1829 was probably around eighteen years of age at her marriage, Hetty’s birthdate would be approximately 1811. Benjamin Ragsdale signed as surety.  James Ellison is further tied to Ambler and Polly Casey when James Ellison signed as surety on the marriage bond Ambler and Polly Casey’s son, Moses Casey.  On May 19, 1829, Moses Casey married Elizabeth Coe in McMinn County, Tennessee.  James Ellison signed as surety and William Dotson signed as the Justice of the Peace.  James Ellison purchased twelve acres of land for $12.00 in Roane County, Tennessee on January 17, 1834.  James Ellison sold 172 acres of land for $900.00 in Roane County, Tennessee on October 5, 1838.

The Ancestral File has this James Ellison included and has the following information:  James Ellison was born on March 7, 1806 in Tennessee, parents unknown.  James Ellison married Hethey Casey and no children are listed.  James Ellison died on September 19, 1875 and was buried in the Kissee Cemetery in Missouri.  The community of Kissee Mills is located in Taney County, Missouri and it is believed that the Kissee Cemetery would be located near this community in Taney County, Missouri.  This information from the Ancestral File was submitted in 1983 by Betty Stayton Dawson of New Castle, Colorado.  According to “My Heritage,” James and Hetty Ellison were the parents of three children:

  Marion Ellison
  Jim Ellison
Mary Kizzar Ellison, b. 1829, Tennessee

James Ellison (born 1806) died in 1864.  Mary K. Ellison married John Curtis Cardwell.  John and Mary Cardwell had at least one son:  -  James Thomas Cardwell.  James T. Cardwell married Missouri Francis Sullivan and they had at least one daughter:  -  Daisy Louisa Cardwell.  Daisy Cardwell married Lewis Franklin McGrew and they have at least one daughter:  -  Helen Maxine McGrew.
