2-222  INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

JOHN CASEY (8.4)

There is a reasonable possibility that John Casey (born 1782 in South Carolina) is related to the authors ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Both were known to have resided in Roane County, Tennessee in the early 1800s.  Both have connections to the Ellison family who lived in Roane County and McMinn County, Tennessee.  This section is included in hope of some day proving a connection between these two Casey lines as well as sort out the various Casey lines to better understand how many Casey lines that originated from Roane County, Tennessee.  It is known that a John Casey (probably two or more men) resided in Roane County, Tennessee from 1807 to 1844.  For additional information on John Casey in Roane County, Tennessee, see the sketch of John Casey (8.4) in the section on Caseys of Roane County, Tennessee.

According to Pansy Wilburn, John and Anne “Caisy” were listed in the Shiloh Baptist Church Minutes in Roane County, Tennessee.  It is believed that the John Casey that lived in Roane County, Tennessee later moved to Greene County, Missouri.  In 1850, John Casey (born 1782 in South Carolina) and his wife, Anna Casey (born 1786 in South Carolina), were enumerated in the census of Greene County, Missouri.  In 1856, the will of John Casey was proven in Greene County, Missouri.  This will mentions John’s wife, Anna Casey, his daughter, Jane (Casey) Ellison, and son, Levi Casey.  Other children were implied in this will but were not named.  Proven by will, John and Anna Casey were parents of two children:

Levi Casey (8.4.1), b. April 23, 1805, Roane County, Tennessee
Jane Casey (who married a Ellison)

According to Pansy Wilburn, John Casey’s “probate papers name the whole family.”  Under “Roane County, Tennessee Marriages,” Pansy Wilburn indicates two additional daughters of John and Anna Casey:

Jane Casey, mar. Henson Ellison, March 27, 1821
Hetty Casey (8.4.3), mar. James Ellison, April 16, 1829

Under “Some Greene County, Misouri marriage records,” Pansy Wilburn lists six additional children of John and Anna Casey:

Sarah Casey, mar. John Evans (Salins?), December 9, 1839
John Allen Casey (8.4.5), mar. Susan Cardwell, April 22, 1841
Frances Mariah Casey (8.4.6), mar. Hugh McHaffie, March 2, 1843
Elizabeth Ann Casey, mar. Samuel R. Robinson, April 13, 1844
  Clarissa E. Casey (8.4.8), mar. Benjamin F. Michael, March 6, 1849
Susannah E. Casey, mar. Alvis Ruyle, September 13, 1849

Jane “Ellison” mentioned in the will of John Casey is probably the Jane Casey that married Henson Ellison on March 27, 1824 in Roane County, Tennessee.  The will of John Casey states that “my eldest daughter and knowing that she has no heirs of her body.  I hereby will and bequeath to her the said eldest daughter Jane Ellison, one hundred dollars in full for her proportional part of my estate.”  This implies that after 36 years of marriage, Jane (Casey) Ellison had no children of her own.

  Sarah Casey, b. 1831, Tennessee
  William D. Casey (8.4.1.2), b. July 23, 1834, Tennesee
