CASEY FAMILY HISTORY 3-65 |
John Casey is probably the son of Ambler Casey (1) and Polly (Ellison) Casey. John was born around 1811 in Roane County, Tennessee. The date of birth was derived from the 1850 census (age 38 years) and the fact that John Casey married in January, 1829. The place of birth was derived from the fact that Johns father, Ambler Casey, married in Roane County, Tennessee and that John Casey married in Roane County, Tennessee. On January 10, 1829, John Casey married Polly Martin in Roane County, Tennessee. From 1830 to 1840, John and Polly Casey lived in McMinn County, Tennessee. On January 13, 1837, John Casey entered a land grant claim in the Hiwassee District. On September 10, 1838, John Casey assigned his claim to Joseph B. Moss. John Casey appears on the delinquent poll tax lists of 1842 and 1843 of McMinn County, Tennessee.
Between 1840 (Johns son, Lewis Casey, was born in Tennessee in 1840 as well as John Casey was listed in the 1840 census in McMinn County, Tennessee) and 1845 (Johns son, John Casey, was born in 1845 in Arkansas), John Casey and his family moved to Arkansas. In 1848, John Casey made a land claim in Madison County, Arkansas. In 1850, John Casey and what appears to be his second wife, Sarah Casey (born 1824 in Tennessee) were living in Madison County, Arkansas. On February 14, 1852, John Casey sold land to James M. Hawkins. On October 21, 1852, John Casey sold land to J. V. Forester in Madison County, Arkansas. On July 15, 1854, Abner E. Casey sold land to John Casey in Madison County, Arkansas. On that same day, July 15, 1854, Elivina Casey sold land to John Casey in Madison County, Arkansas. On December 27, 1854, John Casey sold land to William Dotson in Madison County, Arkansas. On October 4, 1857, John Casey sold land to William D. Dotson. Polly Casey was involved in some way with the three tracts of land that were sold in 1852, 1854 and 1857, therefore, the woman, Sarah Casey, remains a mystery. The obvious possibility is that Mary could have used her middle name in the 1850 census. John Casey was the father of at least seven children:
Daughter, b. 1830 - 1835, McMinn County, Tennessee
Alfred Casey (2.2), b.
January, 1834, McMinn County, Tennessee
Miles H. Casey (2.3), b. 1836, McMinn
County, Tennessee
Ritta Casey (2.4), b. 1839, McMinn County, Tennessee
Lewis
Casey (3), b. May 18, 1840, McMinn County, Tennessee
John Casey, b. 1845,
Arkansas
Matilda Martha Casey, b. 1848, Arkansas
The younger children living Mary Casey in Newton County, Arkansas in 1860 are probably children of John and Mary Casey. These younger children include:
William E. Casey, b. 1851, Arkansas
Braxton Casey, b. 1853, Arkansas
Albert
L. Casey (2.10), b. 1855, Arkansas
Lucinda Casey, b. 1859, Arkansas
Apparently, John Casey died between 1857 (last known land transaction) or 1858 (year before last child, Lucinda, was born) and 1860 (when Mary Casey was living alone with their children). In 1860, Mary Casey (born 1821 in Tennessee), was living her children in Newton County, Arkansas. Mary is listed with John Casey (born 1847 in Arkansas) and Matilda Casey (born 1850 in Arkansas). These two children are the youngest two children listed in the 1850 Madison County, Arkansas census where John Casey was the head of the household. After John Caseys death, Mary (Ellison) Casey probably moved to live near her son, Miles Casey, who was also living in Newton County, Arkansas in 1860. Matilda Casey married Allison Nicholas.

Alfred was with Company A, First Arkansas Cavalry and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Prairie Grove Arkansas. Apparently he was exchanged for Confederate soldiers and he later was detached to man howitzers at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Apparently Alfred Casey married a second time.
