JESSE E. CASEY (8.1)

There is a resonable possibility that Jesse E. Casey (born 1797) is related to the authors ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Both were known to have married in Roane County, Tennessee and both migrated to Arkansas.  This section is included in hope of some day proving a connection between these two Casey lines as well as to sort out the various Casey lines to better understand how many Casey lines lived in Tennessee and Arkansas.  This section will not be carried down for all desecendants and will only include a brief amount on Casey women that married into other lines and will not be a complete genealogy beyond 1900.

Their were two men named Jesse Casey that resided in Roane County, Tennessee from 1807 to 1820.  The younger of the two men was known as Jesse E. Casey (born around 1797) and he married Patsy Coe and resided in Newton County, Arkansas from 1850 to 1863.  For additional information on Jesse Casey in Roane County, Tennessee, see the sketch of Jesse Casey (8.1) in the section on Caseys of Roane County, Tennessee.

According to the 1964 manuscript written by George and Abner Casey, Jesse E. Casey was the son of Jesse Casey.  “A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region” supports this account by stating that Jesses father, Jesse Casey, was of Irish origin and served through the Revolutionary War.  Jesse E. Casey was born between 1797 and 1800.  According to his gravestone, Jesse E. Casey was born in 1797.  The 1850 and 1860 censuses of Newton County, Arkansas indicate that he was born in 1799 and the 1830 census of Morgan County, Tennessee indicate that he was born between 1800 and 1810.  According to Marriage Records of Roane County, Tennessee, 1801 - 1855, Jesse Casey married Patsey Coe.  On April 4, 1817, John Thomas signed as Surety for the marriage bond and on May 10, 1817, Jesse and Patsy were married by Jo McPherson.  According to Aaronetta (Bearden) Martin, Patsey was was born in 1797 and is the daughter of Robert Stephen Coe and Betsy (Hart) Coe.  In 1830, Jesse E. Casey is listed in census of Morgan County, Tennessee.  Jesse appears to have a wife, four sons and three daughters.

According to “A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region,” Jesse E. Casey left Tennessee and moved to Franklin County, Missouri around 1834, moved to Johnson County, Arkansas in 1836 and then moved to Newton County, Arkansas around 1841.  It further states that Jesse Casey and family moved to Newton County, making their home at the head of the Hudson River.  There, Mr. Casey purchased a farm and passed the remainder of his days, dying in 1863.  He was a Southern sympathizer, but took no part in the war.  For many years he was a Primitive Baptist minister and a physician of more than ordinary ability.  Although he never attended school more than three weeks in his life, he possessed a naturally active brain and was a student all his days, being an eloquent speaker and an interesting conversationalist.  The History of the North Arkansas Baptist Association shows that Elder J. E. Casey was pastor of the Crooked Creek Baptist church in the period from 1846 to 1851.

According to the pension papers of Jesse E. Caseys son, Jesse Clinton Casey, Jesse Clinton Casey was born on October 15, 1834 in Jersey County, Georgia.  Unfortunately, there has never been any Jersey County in Georgia.  The 1850 and 1870 censuses of Newton County, Arkansas confirm that Jesse Clinton Casey was born in Georgia, however, the 1860 census of Newton County, Arkansas state that he was born in Tennessee.  Other censuses indicate that several of Jesse E. Caseys children were born in Georgia or Alabama between 1831 and 1838.  Fireside Stories of the Early Days in the Ozarks states my grandfather, Jesse Casey, moved from Tennessee to Johnson County, Arkansas in the latter 30s.  It later states that in 1842, grandfather (Jesse E. Casey) and father (Elijah Casey) settled on (the) Little Buffalo River, 8 ½ miles above the present townsite of Jasper.  It is uncertain where Jesse E. Casey lived between 1831 and 1840.  Jesse E. Casey is not found in the 1840 censuses of Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia or Arkansas.
