JANE “JENNIE” BRYAN (2.9) is the daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan.  Jennie was born on October 22, 1780 in North Carolina.  This birthdate may later than stated as Jennie would have been thirty at the time of her marriage, none of her siblings are known to have been born in the 1780s.  It is known that Samuel Bryan had a daughter, Jane Bryan, who married David Pinkerton (this is proven in the 1824 deed where Samuel Bryan gave “his son-in-law the said David Pinkerton and his daughter Jane Pinkerton” fifty-two acres of land).  A marriage license was issued on October 22, 1810 in Davidson County, Tennessee between David Pinkerton and “Jenny” Bryan.  This appears to be a good match for the marriage of Samuel’s daughter, Jane, to David Pinkerton.  David was born on February 20, 1787 and is the son of David Pinkerton and Betsy Pinkerton.  In 1830, there is a David Pinkerton (born 1790 to 1800) living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  However, there were known to be two David Pinkertons of approximately the same age (the David unrelated the Bryan line married Celia Barnes) living in Davidson County, Tennessee and therefore it is impossible to determine which Pinkerton appeared in this census record.  In 1840, there was a David Pinkerton (born 1780 to 1790) listed in the 1840 census of Davidson County, Tennessee.  This David Pinkerton appears to be too old to the man who married Jane Bryan but the ages that appear census records are known to become less reliable as the head of family becomes older.  David Pinkerton died prior to December, 1842 when property was sold from his estate as indicated in his settlement was recorded in Davidson County, Tennessee recorded on May 15, 1845.  Cash was paid to Samuel Pinkerton and another David Pinkerton.  “Ginny” Pinkerton received “her share of rent 1843 for $13.33 (the rent for 1843 was listed as $40.00 of income into the estate).  The record further states that ”the above settlement was made by and with Jane Pinkerton Admrx (?) October 26, 1844."  It appears that David and Jane Pinkerton were married for over twenty years and that they had children as Jane only received one-third of the rent for 1843.  According to deed, court minutes and Bible records, David and Jennie Pinkerton were the parents of eight children:

   Anna Pinkerton (2.9.1), b. 1815, Tennessee
   Eliza Pinkerton
   James Pinkerton (2.9.3), b. 1820, Tennessee
   Samuel Pinkerton (2.9.4), b. June 17, 1818, Tennessee
   David C. Pinkerton (2.9.5), b 1822, Tennessee
   Margaret Pinkerton (2.9.6), b. June 7, 1813, Tennessee
   Joseph Pinkerton (2.9.7), b. 1827, Tennessee
   Mary Jane Pinkerton (2.9.8), b. 1826, Tennessee

According to Bible records, David Pinkerton died on June 23, 1842 in Davidson County, Tennessee.  This is definitely the David Pinkerton that married Jane Bryan because it is known that Jane Bryan’s husband (David Pinkerton) died shortly prior to December, 1842 according to probate records.  Eliza Pinkerton married Joseph Spence and they had at least one son:  -  James Spence.  There was definitely another David Pinkerton (born 1789 in Virginia) who married Celia Barnes, (born 1791 in Tennessee).  This David Pinkerton was not only the same age as the David Pinkerton (that married Jane Bryan) but also lived in Davidson County, Tennessee during the same period of time.  According to Barbara Thompson, David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) was a nephew of David Pinkerton who married Jane Bryan.  David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) is the son of James Pinkerton and Mary (Foster) Pinkerton.  Barbara Thompson states that James Pinkerton (who married Mary Foster) was the son of David Pinkerton (who married Betsy).  To further confuse the two men, David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) later lived in Greene County, Illinois where many other Bryan relatives resided.  In 1835, David Pinkerton and wife, Celia, of Greene County, Illinois, sold land in Davidson County, Tennessee to Bartley M. Barnes, of Davidson County, Tennessee.  This deed was acknowledged by John Allen, Justice of the Peace in Greene County, Illinois, who is a first cousin of Jane (Bryan) Pinkerton.  It is also known that David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) had a sister, Mary Pinkerton, that married Jane Bryan’s first cousin, William David Allen, son of Thomas Allen and Margaret (Bryan) Allen.  On April 6, 1811, David Pinkerton married in Davidson County, Tennessee to Celia Barnes, daughter of Henry Barnes.  They had twelve children that lived to adulthood and many grandchildren (well documented in a published book).  David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) died on October 4, 1853 and Celia (Barnes) Pinkerton died on April 6, 1863.  Both died in Greene County, Illinois and were buried there in the Pinkerton Cemetery.

ANNA PINKERTON (2.9.1) is the daughter of David Pinkerton and Jane (Bryan) Pinkerton.  Anna was born in 1815 in Tennessee.  On December 22, 1835, Anna Pinkerton married her first cousin, Samuel R. Orton, in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Samuel is the son of Joseph Orton and Mary (Bryan) Orton.  For additional information on the descendants of Samuel Orton and Anna (Pinkerton) Orton, see the sketch of Samuel R. Orton (2.10.1).  Samuel Pinkerton died around 1837.  On September 5, 1844, Anna “Orton” married Cager Stark in Greene County, Illinois.  Cager was born in 1810 in Tennessee.  Cager and Anna Stark were the parents of at least two children:

   Elizabeth A. Stark, b. 1845, Illinois
   Hannah C. Stark, b. 1847, Illinois

In 1850, Cager and Anna Stark were living in Greene County, Illinois.  On September 2, 1854, Cager Stark was shown to have died intestate in Greene County, Illinois.

SAMUEL PINKERTON (2.9.4) is the son of David Pinkerton and Jane (Bryan) Pinkerton.  Samuel was born on June 17, 1818 in Tennessee.  On January 9, 1845, Samuel Pinkerton married Mary E. Jones.  Mary was born on September 26, 1824.  Samuel and Mary Pinkerton were the parents of three children:

Martha Ann Pinkerton, b. January 7, 1846, Tennessee
Margaret Harriet Pinkerton, b. May 31, 1848, Tennessee
David Dempsey Pinkerton (2.9.4.3), b. January 19, 1851, Davidson Co., Tenn.

In 1850, Samuel and Mary Pinkerton were living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Mary (Jones) Pinkerton died on September 7, 1851.  On December 11, 1851, Samuel Pinkerton married a second time to Sarah Martin Webb.  Sarah was born on August 2, 1817.  Sarah was probably a first cousin of Samuel Pinkerton.  “Sallie Webb” was mentioned in the will of Samuel Bryan, Sr. as being a granddaughter of Samuel Bryan, Sr.  In 1850, “Sarah Webb,” born 1820 in Tennessee, was living with her uncle and aunt, John Bryan and Jane Bryan, in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Samuel and Sarah Pinkerton were the parents of four children:

DAVID C. PINKERTON (2.9.5) is the son of David Pinkerton and Jane (Bryan) Pinkerton.  David was born in 1822 in Tennessee.  On December 18, 1845, David C. Pinkerton married Martha Stover in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Martha was born in 1827 in Tennessee and is the daughter of John Stover and Catherine (Garland) Stover.  David and Martha Pinkerton were the parents of at least one son:

   Orvil Henderson Pinkerton (2.9.5.1), b. December 12, 1848, Tennessee

In 1850, David and Martha Pinkerton were living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  On March 19, 1854, David C. Pinkerton wrote a letter to his brother, Samuel Pinkerton (in possession of Mrs. Cliff Linton) which states that David C. Pinkerton was living in Cypress Mill, Perry County, Arkansas.  On March 1, 1860, David C. Pinkerton patented 76.13 acres of land (S30, T5N, R16W) in Perry County, Arkansas.  Family tradition indicates that David C. Pinkerton died and that his widow, Martha (Stover) Pinkerton, married David’s brother, Joseph Pinkerton (2.9.7).  The 1860 census does indeed show that Joseph was married to a woman named Martha and that Orvil Pinkerton (born 1848) was living with them which tends to support Martha’s second marriage to Joseph Pinkerton.  Also, the death certificate of Martha Jane Pinkerton (born 1865) indicates that her parents were Joe Pinkerton and Martha S.... (where the remainder of the last name is not legible).  Because of the 1854 letter and 1860 land patent of David C. Pinkerton, it is possible that David C. Pinkerton died shortly after the patent in March, 1860.  By the time of the 1860 census, Martha had married a second time to Joseph Pinkerton (a very short time which raises doubt to when David C. Pinkerton died).  David C. Pinkerton may also fathered two additional sons, John Pinkerton (born 1854) and James Washington Pinkerton (born 1856).  For additional information on these two possible sons, see the sketch of Joseph Pinkerton (2.9.7).
