BRYAN FAMILY HISTORY   8-255

SAMUEL BRYAN (3) Samuel Bryan is the son of Samuel Bryan (2) and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan.  One of the most convincing facts that link Samuel Bryan (3) to Davidson County, Tennessee is the marriage record showing that Samuel Bryan (3) married Charlotte “Charlton” in Davidson County, Tennessee.  According to a 1956 letter from Martha (Mobley) McGill, Samuel Bryan “was born about 1800 in North Carolina.”  The 1880 census of Hill County, Texas shows that Finus Bryan’s father, Samuel Bryan, was born in Ireland.  The 1880 census of Maury County, Tennessee shows that William DeMoss Bryan’s father, Samuel Bryan, was born in Tennessee.  Several family historians believe that Samuel Bryan married Charlotte Greer Charter.  According to “Marriages of Davidson County, Tennessee,” Samuel Bryan married Charlotte “Charlton” on September 20, 1824 in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Charlotte’s middle name is either Greer or Greyer and Charlotte’s last name is either Charter or Charlton.  For additional information on Charlotte’s name and her relatives, see the sketch of Charlotte Greer Charter (31).  The 1850 census states that Charlotte was born in 1800 in Virginia and the 1860 census states that Charlotte was born in 1802 in Virginia.  The 1880 census of Hill County, Texas shows that Finus Bryan’s mother, Charlotte (Charter) Bryan, was born in Virginia.

8-256   INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

Samuel Bryan’s (3) marriage was documented in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1824.  On September 19, 1839, deeds were recorded of land being sold by both Samuel Bryan (3) and James Bryan (2.3) to Martin Forehand in Davidson County, Tennessee.  On April 20, 1838, Samuel Bryan sold fifty acres of land to Martin Forehand for $650.00, obviously a very prime piece of property at that price.  This land was situated in District Fourteen and was bounded by land owned by Zachariah Allen and Newton Edney.  This the same fifty acres that Samuel Bryan (2) purchased from John Burnham in 1808.  The will of Samuel Bryan (2) states that gave to his “son Samuel Bryan fifty acres of land that I bought from John Burnham.”  It is believed that Samuel Bryan left for Maury County, Tennessee shortly after he sold this land to Martin Forehand.  Samuel and Charlotte Bryan were the parents of at least seven children:

Robert Edmond Bryan, b. 1825, Davidson County, Tennessee
   Sarah J. Bryan (3.2), b. November 21, 1826, Davidson County, Tennessee
Nancy Maria Bryan (3.3), b. January 7, 1827, Davidson County, Tennessee
Thomas Samuel Bryan (3.4), b. 1831, Davidson County, Tennessee
James R. Bryan, b. 1835, Davidson County, Tennessee
William DeMoss Bryan (3.6), b. March 22, 1838, Davidson County, Tennessee
Finus Ewing Bryan (4), b. June 1, 1840, Maury County, Tennessee

In 1830, there is a Samuel “Bryant” listed in census of Davidson County, Tennessee.  However, the children of this Samuel Bryant are different from the known children:  two males (born 1825 to 1830) and one female (born 1820 to 1825).  In 1840, Samuel “Bryant” and his family were living in Maury County, Tennessee.  In 1840, 1841 and 1843, Samuel “Bryant” was listed in the Maury County, Tennessee tax lists.  In 1843, Samuel was shown owning 192 acres of land valued at $1,500 and two slaves valued at $800.  Samuel Bryan wrote his will on March 30, 1847 in Maury County, Tennessee and Charlotte (Charter) Bryan was living alone in the 1850 census of Maury County, Tennessee, therefore, Samuel Bryan died between 1847 and 1850 in Maury County, Tennessee.  According to a 1947 letter from Cornelia (Moore) Redfield, Samuel Bryan “was buried at the Alexander Cemetery which is southeast of his old plantation near Williamsport.”
