JAMES REVIER (21) is the probably the father of the author’s oldest proven Revier ancestor of the authors, William Jackson Revier.  James was born on February 22, 1778 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  On January 3, 1806, James Revier married Nancy Ann Alderson in Richmond County, Virginia.  Nancy was born on January 21, 1790 in Richmond County, Virginia and is the daughter of John Alderson and Rachel Alderson.  James Revier is highly likely to be the son of James Revier, Sr. and Winifred (Thomas) Revier.  James “Riveer” wrote his will on November 30, 1815 and this will began probate by December 16, 1816 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  This will mentions, son, James Riveer, son Joel Riveer, son Cyrus Riveer, daughter, Polly Riveer and two children of deceased son, William Riveer.  It is very fortunate that this will supported and enhanced by a family Bible that states:  James “Riveer” was married on November 14, 1771 and lists the following children: Milly Riveer, b. December 26, 1772; Abner Riveer, b. August 28, 1775; James Riveer, b. February 22, 1778; Joel Riveer, b. June 30, 1780; William Riveer, b. April 5, 1783; Cyrus Riveer, b. September 19, 1785; Polly Riveer, b. October 1, 1788.  Marriage Records of Northumberland County, Virginia show that James “Reveer” married Winifred Thomas on November 12, 1771.

James and Nancy Revere as well as Nancy’s parents moved from Richmond County, Virginia to Maury County, Tennessee.  Numerous legal documents connect James and Nancy Revere to John Alderson and his first wife,  Rachel, and his second wife, Elizabeth Alderson.  In February, 1825, an excellent genealogical document (power of attorney) provides proof that James Revier and Nancy Alderson are connected to Nancy’s deceased father, John Alderson.  This Lancaster County, Virginia power of attorney establishes that James and Nancy Revier remained in Lancaster County, Virginia as late as 1825.  In December, 1827, Nancy Revier is found in Chauncery Court Records of Maury County, Tennessee.  These court records involve land in Virginia and provide excellent information concerning Nancy’s siblings, step-siblings, step-mother and even an uncle.  Although these records do not indicate the residence of Nancy Revier, it is most likely that she was then living in Maury County, Tennessee.  This record indicates that Nancy was a daughter of John Alderson and his first wife, Rachel.  The estate of John Alderson was still being settled as late as 1836 when Gerard Greenfield sued the descendants of John Alderson concerning land that John Alderson had once owned.  This document again provides excellent documentation of Nancy Revier to her siblings, step-siblings and step-mother.  These records mention James Revier and Nancy Revier, his wife, and it can be assumed that they were residing in Maury County, Tennessee where the court case was held and where the land in dispute was located.

Unfortunately, no records have been located to establish the children of James and Nancy Revere.  There are very few Revier family members that ever lived Maury County, Tennessee and Maury County, Tennessee is the only county in Tennessee where any Revier family members lived prior to the Civil War.  Other than James and Nancy Revier, only six Revier family members have been discovered living in Maury County, Tennessee prior to the Civil War.  Because of their estimated dates of birth, places of birth (Virginia) and place of residence (Maury County, Tennessee), there is a very high probability that all of these other early Revier families living in early Maury County, Tennessee are children of James and Nancy Revier.  James and Nancy Revier is believed to be the parents of at least six children:

JAMES RIVEER, SR. (28) is probably the father of James Revier of Maury County, Tennessee.  James was born around 1751 (since James married in 1771).  James “Riveer” wrote his will on November 30, 1815 and this will began probate by December 16, 1816 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  This will mentions the following children:

   James Riveer (son)
   Joel Riveer (son)
   Cyrus Riveer (son)
   Polly Riveer (daughter)
William Riveer (deceased son with two children)

It is very fortunate that the will of James Revier is supported and enhanced by a family Bible.  This family Bible indicates that James “Riveer” was married on November 14, 1771 and lists the following children:

   Milly Riveer, b. December 26, 1772
   Abner Riveer, b. August 28, 1775
   James Riveer (21), b. February 22, 1778
   Joel Riveer, b. June 30, 1780
   William Riveer, b. April 5, 1783
   Cyrus Riveer (28.6), b. September 19, 1785
   Polly Riveer, b. October 1, 1788

The Bible record has two additional children who probably died without issue prior to 1815 when James Revier, Sr. wrote his will.  According to Donna Randolph, Milly Revier died on May 3, 1795 which supports this assumption.  Marriage records of Northumberland County, Virginia show that James “Reveer” married Winifred Thomas on November 12, 1771.  This date matches very well the marriage date found in the family Bible and establishes the wife of James Revier, Sr.

PETER THOMAS (29) is probably the father of Winefred Thomas who married James Revere (28).  Volume 27, Page 45 of “The Bulletin of the Northumberland County Historical Society” has execellent information on this line.  It states that Peter Thomas married Anne Cornish, daughter of John Cornish.  Peter and Anne Thomas were the parents of at least one son:

   Rodham Thomas

It further states that Winefred Thomas was the step-brother of Rodham Thomas.  It further states that Winefred Thomas married James “Revere” and that Rodham Thomas “was apprenticed to James Revere.”  Therefore, Peter Thomas was the father of another child (a daughter) whose mother was not Anne Thomas (stated to be a half-brother):

Winefred Thomas (born ca. 1751 - based on marriage date)

It further states that the estate of John Cornish listed Rodham Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas as orphans of Peter Thomas.  Because both are legal heirs of John Cornish (father of Anne Cornish), it can be concluded that Peter Thomas and Anne Cornish were the parents of at least two children:

   Rodham Thomas
   Elizabeth Thomas

Since James Revere and Winefred Thomas were married in 1771 suggests that James Revere and Winefred Thomas were born around 1751 (assuming they married at age twenty).  It is almost certain that “Wine” Thomas (born 1753) is the daughter of Peter Thomas that married James Revere.  The year of birth (1753) provides a very good match when compared to the marriage date of James Revere and Winefred Thomas (1771).  “Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume 3,” provide birthdates for children of Peter Thomas.  The birth record under “Church Record of Births (with a few deaths) Northumberland County. Limiting dates 1661 - 1810,” establish that various men named Peter Thomas were the father of: three daughters:

Sarah Ann Thomas (daughter - born February 25, 1729)
   Winef’d Thomas (daughter - born May 17, 1732)
Wine Thomas (daughter - born February 15, 1753)

“Records of Northumberland County, Virginia - abstracts” indicate that Peter Thomas could be the son of John Thomas who left a will that was written on August 15, 1710 and proved on February 18, 1712/1713.  This will indicates that the wife of John Thomas was Elizabeth Thomas.  This will had witnesses listed as:Dennis Conway, James Loughman, Bryant Smith and John Rankin.  This will also states that “daughter Elizabeth to have my orphan girl, Anne Fitzgerrel.”  This will indicates that John Thomas and his wife, Elizabeth Thomas, were the parents of six children:

   Richard Thomas (son)
   William Thomas (son)
   Peter Thomas (son)
   John Thomas (son)
Elizabeth Thomas (daughter - under age)
Jane Thomas (daughter - under age)
