BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-265

WYATT BROOKS (2.10) is the son of Jordan Brooks (2) and Mary (Cruse) Brooks.  Wyatt was born on September 30, 1805 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  On April 16, 1829, Wyatt Brooks married Margaret Clark in Upson County, Georgia.  Margaret was born on March 7, 1807 in Cumberland County, North Carolina and is the daughter of Gilbert Clark and Jennet Clark.  From 1830 to 1850, Wyatt lived in the following Georgia counties:  Harris (1830), Talbot (1840) and Stewart (1850).  Wyatt and Margaret Brooks were the parents of at least seven children:

   Lezina Catherine Brooks (2.10.2), b. October 2, 1831, Georgia
   Julia Frances Brooks (2.10.3), b. October 24, 1833, Georgia

In 1870, Wyatt and Margaret Brooks were living in Marion County, Georgia.  According to “Brooks Family History,” Wyatt and Margaret Brooks had another son:  David Brooks who was “taken prisoner of the Mexicans.”  Wyatt Brooks was a Methodist minister.  Wyatt Brooks died on October 16, 1878 in Butler, Georgia and Margaret (Clark) Brooks died on August 19, 1888 in Butler, Georgia.  Both were buried in Butler, Georgia.  Benjamin C. Brooks died as an infant on November 10, 1851 in Butler, Georgia.

MARY JANE BROOKS (2.10.1) is the daughter of Wyatt Brooks and Margaret (Clark) Brooks.  Mary was born on February 6, 1830 in Georgia.  On November 2, 1848, Mary Jane Brooks married Edwin Riley Nelson in Talbot County, Georgia.  Edwin was born on January 23, 1821 in South Carolina and is the son of Gideon Nelson (born 1774 in South Carolina) and Sarah (Hancock) Nelson (born 1790 in South Carolina).  Edwin and Mary Nelson were the parents of nine children:

Nelson and Emma (Smith) Nelson.  Lottie was born on July 29, 1887 in Talbot County, Georgia.  On September 18, 1909, Lottie Nelson married William Ross McDonald in Atlanta, Georgia.  William was born on August 28, 1891 in Cedartown, Georgia and is the son of Ross McDonald and Lorena (Gresham) McDonald.  William and Lottie McDonald were the parents of one son:

Presley.  Lillian was born on September 17, 1914 and is the daughter of James E. Presley and Emma G. (Ogletree) Presley.  Ross and Lillian McDonald have one son:  -  Ross Augustus McDonald, b. October 20, 1950, Albany, Georgia.  Lillian (Presley) McDonald died on September 12, 1940 and Ross A. McDonald died on June 10, 1976 in Albany, Georgia.  Both were buried in the Southview Cemetery in Thomaston, Georgia.

SARAH MARGARET NELSON (2.10.1.5) is the daughter of Edwin Riley Nelson and Mary Jane (Brooks) Nelson.  Sallie was born on October 3, 1857 in Talbot County, Georgia.  Sallie Nelson married John Jefferson Goolsby of Pleasant Hill.  John was born on June 1, 1850 in Georgia and is the son of Edwin Riley Goolsby and Mary (Cosby) Goolsby.  John Goolsby was previously married to Nancy Jane Waldron and they had three children:  Eugene Goolsby (born 1883), Edwin F. Goolsby (born 1887) and Clifton Goolsby (born 1888).  John and Sallie Goolsby were the parents of five children:

In 1880, William and Julia Mathis were living in Stewart County, Georgia.  Julia (Brooks) Mathis died on November 7, 1893.  In 1900, William R. Mathis was living in Stewart County, Georgia.  William Rutherford Mathis died on May 27, 1904.  William and Julia Mathis were buried in the Mathis Family Cemetery in Stewart County, Georgia.  Addie Mathis died in 1854.  In 1900, William J. Mathis was single and was living in Stewart County, Georgia.  William Jasper Mathis died on May 1, 1915.

Ambrose Mathis first married Julia Corine Avery (born March 28, 1885) of Georgetown and they had two children:  -  Branson Mathis,  -  Ambrose Powell Mathis, Jr.  Corine (Avery) Mathis died on September 9, 1909.  Ambrose Mathis married a second time to Lily Rouch of Dawson, Georgia and they had two children:  -  Julia Mathis,  -  Ruth Mathis.  Ambrose and Lily Mathis lived in Doerun, Georgia.  Ambrose Mathis died in 1938.

James Gilmore Mathis moved to California and had no children.  Thomas Brooks Mathis died in 1937.  In 1900, Maggie Mathis was living with her father in Stewart County, Georgia.  Maggie Mathis later lived in Hurtsboro, Alabama.  Eddie Mathis died in 1871.  Marvin Mathis first married Alma Jones (born October, 1874 in Georgia).  In 1900, Marvin and Alma Mathis were living with a baby son (born December, 1899) in Stewart County, Georgia.  Later, Marvin Mathis married Annie Lee Sudduth and moved to Alabama.

JOHN WYATT MATHIS (2.10.3.3) is the son of William Rutherford Mathis and Julia Frances (Brooks) Mathis.  John was born on April 26, 1856 in Stewart County, Georgia.  John Mathis married Laura Talulah Gilbert.  Talulah was born on October 16, 1852 in Georgia.  John and Talulah Mathis were the parents of three children:

   L. Potis Mathis
   Mattie Mathis
   John Mathis

John Wyatt Mathis died on May 22, 1885 and Talulah (Gilbert) Mathis died on April 10, 1928.  Potis Mathis married Annie Carter and lived in Omaha, Georgia.  Mattie Mathis married Lee Pope and they had four children:  -  Edward Lee Pope, b. September 8, 1891,  -  Evelyn Louise Pope,  -  Marion Pope,  -  Joseph Pope.  Edward Pope died on December 11, 1949 and was buried in the Omaha Cemetery in Stewart County, Georgia.  Evelyn Pope married J. D. Singer, Jr. of Lumpkin, Georgia.  John Mathis married Derlie Pope and they had four children:  -  Margery Mathis,  -  John Mathis, Jr.,  -  David Barton Mathis,  -  Mary Evelyn Mathis.  Margery Mathis married Fred Harrell.

ROBERT LEE MATHIS (2.10.3.7) is the son of William Rutherford Mathis and Julia Frances (Brooks) Mathis.  Robert was born in September of 1863 in Georgia.  In 1895, Robert Mathis married Cora M. Cleveland (born April of 1877 in Georgia) of Stewart County, Georgia and they were the parents of five children:

Robert Mathis died in Florida in 1917 and his family moved to Decatur, Georgia.

MARY ANNABELLE MATHIS (2.10.3.10) is the daughter of William Rutherford Mathis and Julia Frances (Brooks) Mathis.  Mary was born in 1869 in Georgia.  On July 6, 1886, Mary Mathis married Dr. Albert Sidney Gilbert of Florence, Georgia.  Albert was born on January 4, 1862.  Albert and Mary Gilbert were the parents of four children:

Lillian Gilbert married W. M. Grimes and they had two children:  -  Sidney L. Grimes,  -  Albert Grimes.  Sidney and Albert Grimes were both residents of Florence, Georgia.  On September 14, 1913, May Gilbert married W. L. Maddox and they had two children:  -  Gilbert Maddox,  -  W. L. Maddox, Jr..  Gilbert and W. L. Maddox were both residents of Lumpkin, Georgia.  Gilbert Maddox married Laura Forbes.  W. L. Maddox, Jr. married Mary Alice Shell.  Albert Gilbert, Jr. married Docia Elliot of Columbus, Georgia and they had three children:  -  Mary Ann Gilbert,  -  Betty Gilbert,  -  Peggy Gilbert.

On February 8, 1914, Julia Gilbert married Samuel Walton Worthington, Jr.  Samuel was born on September 28, 1891 and is the son of Samuel Walton Worthington and Martha (Perkins) Worthington (1.6.9.1).  Julia and Samuel were third cousins.  Samuel Worthington, Jr. was sheriff of Stewart County, Georgia.  Samuel and Julia Worthington were the parents of four children:  -  Russell Worthington, b. 1915,  -  Son (died in infancy), b. October 31, 1916,  -  Sammie W. Worthington, b. August, 1919,  -  Son (died in infancy).  Russell Worthington died on October 20, 1920.

CHARLES CLARK MATHIS (2.10.3.14) is the son of William Rutherford Mathis and Julia Frances (Brooks) Mathis.  Charles was born in September of 1879 in Georgia.  In 1900, Charlie Mathis was a boarder at the home of James Deason, his future father-in-law in Stewart County, Georgia.  In 1902, Charles Mathis married Eva Deason.  Eva was born in July of 1884 in Georgia and is the daughter of James Deason and Julia Deason.  Charles and Eva Mathis were the parents of eleven children:

Shierling and they were residents of Norfolk, Virginia.  They had two children, one who died in infancy.  Charles Mathis was in the United States Navy.  Julian, Mary, Elizabeth and Milton Mathis were residents of Lumpkin, Georgia and Marion Mathis was a resident of Columbus, Georgia.

Pool.  Lena (Bateman) Pool died on December 17, 1940.  Beulah Bateman married Jim Moulton.  Beulah (Bateman) Moulton died on December 22, 1937.  Clyde Bateman married Lucile Frierson.  Clyde Bateman died in September of 1917.

THOMAS WYATT MARTIN (2.10.5.1) is the son of Robert Martin and Martha Caroline (Brooks) Martin.  Thomas was born on May 12, 1866 in Talbot County,Georgia.  Thomas Martin married Kate McComb.  Kate is the daughter of James McComb and Elizabeth (Brannigan) McComb.  Thomas and Kate Martin were the parents of three children:

Thomas Everett Martin married a Miss Ballard.  Thomas was the father of two children:  -  Thomas Everett Martin, Jr.,  -  Milward Wyatt Martin.  In 1957, Thomas Everett Martin was living in Maplewood, New Jersey.  Harold Martin died as an infant in Decatur, Georgia.

THOMAS SANFORD BROOKS (2.10.6) is the son of Wyatt Brooks and Margaret (Clark) Brooks.  Thomas was born on January 1, 1846 in Georgia.  On October 11, 1871, Thomas Brooks married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Battle.  Lizzie was born in 1851 in Georgia.  Thomas and Lizzie Brooks were the parents of at least four children:
