BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-381

JORDAN BROOKS (9.1)

Jordan Brooks who married Elizabeth Cockram could be related to the author’s Brooks line, but this connection should be considered very speculative.  This Brooks line resided in many of the same places that this author’s Brooks line resided:  Putnam County, Georgia, Upson County, Georgia and Dale County, Alabama.  They also resided in many neighboring and nearby counties:  Morgan County, Georgia, Jones County, Georgia, Crawford County, Georgia, Coffee County, Alabama and Chambers County, Alabama.  However, the Brooks surname is a very common surname and there are many other Brooks families residing in these same counties.  The given names are common between this line and the author’s Brooks line:  specially Jordan Brooks and Robert Brooks being prominent given names in both lines.  According to Marion B. Brunson, “Judson” Jordan Brooks married “Mary” Elizabeth Cochran.  This author has found no supporting documentation of either first name, Judson or Mary.

Assuming that Jordan was around twenty years of age when he married Elizabeth Cockram in 1815, Jordan Brooks was born around 1795.  The 1850 census of Coffee County, Georgia indicate that Elizabeth was born around 1800 which supports the 1795 birthdate, maybe even even later than 1795, however, the age of widows are often older than census records indicate.  Several family records indicate that Jordan Brooks was born in South Carolina but this author has not found any direct documentation supporting this birthplace.  The author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), was found in Edgefield County, South Carolina up to 1807, therefore, all documenation of any Jordan Brooks residing in Edgefield County, South Carolina would be Jordan Brooks (2), the author’s direct ancestor.  Many researchers have speculated that Matthew Brooks was the brother of Jordan Brooks (9.1).  The 1850 census of Coffee County, Alabama indicate that Matthew Brooks was born in South Carolina in 1783 which would support the birthplace of Jordan being South Carolina.

There are many researchers that state that Robert Brooks was the father of Jordan Brooks (9.1).  This is confirmed by the 1827 deed of gift where Robert Brooks, “in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my beloved sons, Jordan Brooks and Thomas J. Brooks.”  This deed was dated November 23, 1827 and was recorded in Crawford County, Georgia.  This establishes that Robert Brooks was the father of at least two sons:

   Jordan Brooks
   Thomas J. Brooks

In 1972, Marion Brunson stated that the father of Jordan Brooks (9.1) was “believed to Robert Rose Brooks, son of Robert Brooks of Mecklenburg County, Virginia.”  However, the will of Robert Rose Brooks (1.2) indicates that Robert Rose Brooks (1.2) was the father of Jordan Gilmore Brooks (born 1822).  The children of Robert Rose Brooks (1.2) that were mentioned in his will were from a marriage late in life and family tradition indicates that he was married twice previously and had many more children.  However, it is not very likely that he named two sons by the same given name, Jordan (however, this author does have another line where this was the case).  Robert Rose Brooks first married in 1780 to Mary Parham, so the timeframe and locations match, but there remains the problem of Robert Rose Brooks naming two of his children by the same given name, Jordan.  Other descendants of Jordan Brooks (9.1) present the case the two nephews of Jordan Brooks (2) or the son of Jordan Brooks (2) could be the father of Robert Brooks and grandfather of Jordan Brooks (9.1).  Jordan Brooks (2) had a son, Robert Brooks (born 1787).  The brother of Jordan Brooks, Wade Brooks, had a son, Robert Brooks (born 1783 to 1787).  The brother of Jordan Brooks, William Brooks, had a son, Robert Brooks (born between 1780 and 1788).  Knowing that Jordan Brooks (9.1) was born around 1795 and that Jordan Brooks (9.1) probably had a brother, Robert Brooks who was born around 1792, it appears unlikely that Jordan Brooks (9.1) was the son of any of these relatives of Jordan Brooks (2).

7-382   INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

The will of Benjamin Cockram indicates that two of his daughters married men named Brooks and there is the obvious possibility that these two men could be brothers that married sisters.  This will indicates and Benjamin Cockram had two daughters:

   Daughter (married Jordan Brooks)
   Daughter (married Robert Brooks)

These marriages were recorded in Morgan County, Georgia:

Jordan Brooks married Elizabeth Cochran, January 19, 1815
Robert Brooks married Tuby (Feruby) Cockran, February 17, 1810

The 1850 census of Coffee County, Alabama suggests that Matthew Brooks and Jordan Brooks (9.1) could be brothers:

   Household 198 - Jordan Brooks, b. 1827, son of Jordan Brooks (9.1)
   Household 199 - Matthew Brooks, b. 1783, South Carolina
possible brother of Jordan Brooks (9.1)
   Household 204 - Robert P. Brooks, b. 1819, son of Jordan Brooks (9.1)
   Household 205 - Elizabeth Brooks, b. 1800, widow of Jordan Brooks (9.1)

The 2003 family descendant chart received from Woody Brooks indicates that Jordan Brooks (9.1) is the son of Robert Brooks.  It indicates that Robert Brooks was born in 1760 in Virginia and was the father of four sons:

Matthew Brooks, b. 1783 (later lived with Jordan in Alabama)
Robert Brooks, b. 1792, South Carolina (married Cochram 1810)
Hiram Brooks, b. 1800, South Carolina
Jordan Brooks, b. 1790s, South Carolina, died 1847 Georgia
(gives substantial details on Jordan’s descendants)

The 2003 web site of Keith A. Selke indicates that Jordan Brooks (9.1) is the son of Robert Brooks.  It appears that this web site is based on the same family tradition found in the above family descendant chart by Woody Brooks.  It states that Robert Brooks was born in 1760 in Virginia and died around 1830 in Crawford County, Georgia.  It should be noted that children were listed as [?] which is stated as a “questionable relationship (local residence, naming patterns, wrong branch in the right family tree, nearly 100 % theory).”  Unfortunately this web site provides no references or source documentation to support these family connections.  It shows that Robert Brooks was the father of five sons:

BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-383

Matthew Brooks, b. ca. 1783, South Carolina, d. Chambers County, Alabama
Jordan Brooks, b. ca. 1790, SC, d. before 1850, Upson County, Georgia
   (provides details concerning this family)
Robert Brooks, Jr., b. ca. 1792, South Carolina
Hiram Brooks, b. ca. 1800, SC, d. ca. 1848, Chambers County, Alabama
Thomas Jefferson Brooks, b. 1804, SC, d. 1888, Chambers County, Alabama

The above family connection are supported by many events for these Brooks families that exist in Chambers County, Alabama:

Thomas J. Brooks, 1836, appointed guardian of McLendell children
Robert P. Brooks, 1845, sold land in Upson County, Georgia from
   Chambers County, Alabama
Robert P. Brooks, 1845, appointed guardian of children of John Head
Thomas J. Brooks, 1848, administrator for estate of Hiram Brooks
Matthew Brooks, died in Chambers County, Alabama (Selke)
Thomas Jefferson Brooks, died 1888 in Chambers County, Alabama (Selke)

The 1820 census of Jones County, Georgia support the above family tradition.  Jordan Brooks (9.1) may have been enumerated in the 1820 census of Jones County, Georgia.  This Jordan Brooks (born 1794 to 1804) is shown with wife (born 1794 to 1804) and four sons (born 1810 to 1820).  This census provides a reasonable match for Jordan Brooks but introduces three additional sons (born 1810 to 1820) that are not included in family as presented by many descendants.  The 1820 census of Jones County, Georgia include at least eleven Brooks men with families with three that match the above family tradition:

Jordan Brooks (born 1794 to 1804) - probably Jordan Brooks (9.1)
Robert Brooks, Jun. (born 1794 to 1804) - possible brother, Jordan Brooks (9.1)
Robert Brooks, Sen. (born before 1775) - possible father, Jordan Brooks (9.1)

This earliest known document concerning Jordan Brooks (9.1) was his marriage to Elizabeth Cochram in 1815 in Morgan County, Georgia.  On January 19, 1815, Jordan Brooks married Elizabeth “Cockram” in Morgan County, Georgia.  Elizabeth is the daughter of Benjamin “Cockram” who wrote his will on August 23, 1815 which was recorded in Morgan County, Georgia on January 10, 1816.  Item 7 in Benjamin’s will indicate that the balance of his property be divided among his children (husbands named for daughters):  “Samuel Paskill, James Cockram, Marvill Kelley, Bannester Cockram, Jordan Brooks, Benjamin Cockram, Robert Brooks and John Cockram.”  Item 8 also gave furniture to Ruby Brooks (believed to have married Robert Brooks).  According to the 1850 census of Coffee County, Alabama, Elizabeth Cockram was born in 1800 in Georgia.  On January 9, 1819, Jordan Brooks sold 25 acres of land to Thomas Loveritt in Morgan County, Georgia.

A 1980 query by Kathleen Eastridge states that Robert Peter Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (9.1), was born on August 25, 1817 in Putnam County, Georgia and that Martha Brooks, daughter of Jordan Brooks (9.1), was born on April 16, 1831 in Putnam County, Georgia.  These two birthplaces of the children of Jordan Brooks (9.1) would suggest that Jordan Brooks (9.1) resided in Putnam County, Georgia from 1817 to 1831.  However, source documents imply that Jordan Brooks was still living in Morgan County, Georgia in 1819 and Jones County, Georgia in 1820.  There are several documents that indicate the author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), resided in Putnam County, Georgia.  A 1940s Brooks Family manuscript by Myrtle (Lackey) Ashley indicates that Jordan Brooks (2) moved to Putnam County, Georgia in 1808.  This is very possible as it is known that the last document found for Jordan Brooks (2) in Edgefield County, South Carolina was January 10, 1807 where Jordan and Mary Brooks sold land there.  The earliest known document of Jordan Brooks (2) in Putnam County, Georgia was where he served on a Petit Jury in March of 1809.  On September 10, 1810, Jordan Brooks (2) married a second time to Mary Jackson in Putnam County, Georgia.  On May 1, 1811, Jordan Brooks sold land in Putnam County, Georgia “except (for) twelve feet square in the Garden, containing the grave of the late Mrs. Jordan Brooks.”  There is no doubt that the 1810 and 1811 documents refer to the author’s ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), and the 1809 reference is most likely to be the author’s ancestor as well.  Sarah Brooks, daughter of Jordan Brooks (2), married Joel Jackson on March 24, 1808 in Putnam County, Georgia.  Isham Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), married Lezina Jordan on October 3, 1811 in Putnam County, Georgia.  Robert Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), married Frances Baugh on December 31, 1811 in Putnam County, Georgia.  Over ten relatives of Jordan Brooks (2) have been located in census records of Putnam County, Georgia.  It is very likely that Jordan Brooks (9.1) may have never resided in Putnam County, Georgia and that his descendants found this author’s ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), and mistaken him for their ancestor.

7-384   INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

The 2003 web site by Keith A. Selke indicates all of the children of Jordan Brooks (9.1) were born in Upson County, Georgia from 1817 through 1840.  This web site also indicates that Jordan Brooks died before 1850 in Upson County, Georgia.  The events presented in the web site indicate that Jordan Brooks (9.1) resided in Upson County, Georgia from 1817 until his death in the 1840s.  Robert Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (9.1), married Elizabeth Head on March 12, 1837 in Upson County, Georgia.  Phebe Ann Brooks, daughter of Jordan Brooks (9.1), married Isham “Moon” on March 2, 1839 in Upson County, Georgia.  In 1845, Robert P. Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (9.1), sold land in Upson County, Georgia while residing in Chambers County, Alabama.  This could be land that Robert P. Brooks, the oldest son of Jordan Brooks (9.1), was selling from the estate of his father.  Again, it is known that the author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2), resided in Upson County, Georgia during this timeframe.  The 1830 census of Upson County, Georgia enumerates Jordan Brooks (2) and shows his birthdate as between 1760 and 1770.  On December 30, 1830, Jordan Brooks (2) purchased 202 1/2 acres of land located in Upson County, Georgia from Henry Sims of Walton County, Georgia.  On July 7, 1833, Jordan Brooks (2) sold land in Upson County, Georgia to his son, Williamson Brooks (3), both direct ancestors of the authors.  It is believed that all three of these events refer to the author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2).  By 1830, the land being sold by Henry Sims could be either Jordan Brooks, however, the 1830 census record and 1833 deed are almost certainly Jordan Brooks (2), this would make the 1830 deed much more likely to be Jordan Brooks (2).  Further investigation on the descriptions of these two deeds may reveal that this is the same land (being purchased in 1830 and sold in 1833).  There are other connections of relatives of Jordan Brooks (2) to Upson County, Georgia.  Wyatt Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), married Margaret Clark on April 17, 1829 in Upson County, Georgia.  Alexander S. Brooks, nephew of Jordan Brooks (2), married Eliza Jane Lowe on April 6, 1854 in Upson County, Georgia.

BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-385

There are several other documents from other counties in Georgia that could be either Jordan Brooks (9.1) or the direct ancestor of the author, Jordan Brooks (2).  “Sesquicentennial Pike County, Georgia” shows that a Jordan Brooks was on the 1825 tax digest.  “History of Lamar County, Georgia” shows that in 1828 Jordan Brooks was a member of the Barnesville Methodist Episcopal Church in what was then Pike County, Georgia.  Both Pike County, Georgia and Lamar County, Georgia are neighboring counties of Upson County, Georgia.  There are also other documents that are known to be connected to the author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks (2).  Jordan Brooks (2) is enumerated in the 1820 census of Wilkinson County, Georgia where Jordan was shown to be born prior to 1775.  This is the same county where Williamson Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), married his wife, Susannah Olliff.  At least four other relatives of Jordan Brooks (2) were found in the 1820 census of Wilkinson County, Georgia:  Robert Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), Robert Rose Brooks (1.2), brother of Jordan Brooks (2), Joel Jackson who is believed to have married Sarah Brooks, daughter of Jordan Brooks (2), Abner Woodall who married Sarah Baugh, niece of Jordan Brooks (2).  Allen Brooks, son of Jordan Brooks (2), married Mariah Bulloch on December 23, 1824 in Wilkinson County, Georgia.  Also, it is known that Jordan Brooks (2) last resided in Talbot County, Georgia where he wrote his will (October 5, 1835) and where his will was recorded (April 1, 1839).  Numerous relatives of Jordan Brooks (2) resided in Talbot County, Georgia with over 70 census listings in Talbot County, Georgia that have been tied to the line of Jordan Brooks (2).

The remainder of this sketch will concentrate on the children of Jordan Brooks (9.1).  A family group sheet from Woody Brooks states in the sources:  “names of minor children and ages found in estate records of Jordan Brooks in Upson County, Georgia filed in Coffee County, Alabama.”  A 1980 query by Mrs. T. Jack Dorough states that Jordan Brooks died in Upson County, Georgia and that his “estate was probated on February 2, 1850.”  Unfortunately, this author has not seen this critical documentation.  Claire C. Dorough states that “estate papers filed in Coffee County, Alabama by Robert P. Brooks for distribution of property of Elizabeth Cochran Brooks, April 11, 1861.”  Unfortunately, this author has not seen this critical documention as well.  The 1850 census of Coffee County, Alabama provide information connecting this family of Jordan Brooks (9.1):

Household 198, Jordan Brooks, b. 1827, son of Jordan Brooks
Household 199, Matthew Brooks, b. 1783, possible brother of Jordan
Household 204, Robert P. Brooks, b. 1819, son of Jordan Brooks
Household 205, Elizabeth Brooks, b. 1800, widow of Jordan Brooks
Household 205, Thomas J. Brooks, b. 1831, son of Jordan Brooks

Household 205, Hiram Brooks, b. 1838, son of Jordan Brooks
Household 205, Elizabeth Brooks, b. 1840, daughter of Jordan Brooks

BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-386

Claire C. Dorough summarizes the guardianship papers for the minor children of Jordan Brooks (9.1) which provide additional information concerning the family of Jordan Brooks (9.1):

   Elizabeth Brooks, requesting guardianship, widow
   Elizabeth Brooks, security bond, widow
Robert P. Brooks, security bond, son
   Jordan Brooks, security bond, son
William Howagez, security bond, possible son-in-law
Martha Brooks, minor child of Jordan, b. 1835
Hiram Brooks, minor child of Jordan, b. 1838
Elizabeth Brooks, minor child of Jordan, b. 1840

A 1980 query by Kathleen Eastridge states Jordan Brooks (9.1) married Elizabeth “Cockram.”  Sources listed were:  “Jane Johnson, LDS Records, Allie Claire Dorough, Estate Papers, Cockrum Family History by Emmett Cockrum.”  Jordan and Elizabeth Brooks were shown to be the parents of six children:

Robert Peter Brooks, b. August 25, 1817, Putnam County, Georgia
   Jordan Brooks, b. 1825
Martha Brooks, b. April 16, 1831, Putnam County, Georgia
   Thomas Brooks, b. 1832
   Hiram Brooks, b. 1837
   Elizabeth Brooks, b. 1839

A 2003 family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks (source unknown) provides the most detailed summary of the family of Jordan Brooks (9.1) and Elizabeth Cochran (and provides several sources of information).  This information closely tracks the information provided on the 2003 web site by Keith A. Selke:

   Robert Peter Brooks (9.1.1), b. August 25, 1817, Georgia
Phoebe Ann Brooks, b. ca. 1820, Georgia
   Jordan Brooks (9.1.3), b. 1825, Georgia
   Sarah Brooks, b. 1826, Georgia
   Thomas J. Brooks, b. 1831, Georgia
   Mary K. Brooks, b. 1834, Georgia
   Martha Brooks, b. 1835, Georgia
   Hiram Brooks (9.1.8), b. September 12, 1838, Georgia
Elizabeth “Betty” Brooks, b. 1840, Georgia
Peggy Brooks, b. ca. 1843, Georgia

According to the 1980 query by Mrs. T. Jack Dorough, Jordan Brooks died in Upson County, Georgia and that his estate was probated on February 2, 1850.  According to a family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks, the estate records of Jordan Brooks in Upson County, Georgia were filed in Coffee County, Alabama.  In 1850, Elizabeth (Cockram) Brooks was still living with her children in Coffee County, Alabama.  On May 1, 1851, Elizabeth (Cockram) Brooks applied for guardianship on the minor children of Jordan Brooks.  On April 11, 1861, Robert P. Brooks recorded estate distribution records for his mother, Elizabeth (Cockram) Brooks.  On March 3, 1839, Phoebe Ann Brooks married Isham Moore or Moon in Upson County, Georgia.  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Sarah Brooks married Asa J. Williamson.  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Thomas J. Brooks married a woman named Mary E..  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Mary K. Brooks married Edwin S. Watson.  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Martha Brooks married Walter McCarthy.  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Elizabeth Brooks married James Clark.  The family group sheet sent by Woody Brooks indicate that Peggy Brooks died at the age of six months.

In 1850, Robert and Elizabeth Brooks were living in Coffee County, Alabama.  “The History of Coffee County, Alabama” gives a detailed account of the death of Robert Peter Brooks who “was sheriff of Coffee County.  On September 2, 1864, deserters invaded the County and burned the Court House.  The Home Guard under the guidance of Captain Payne then went in pursuit.  The hot battle ensued and the country-side reverberated with sounds of muskets which aroused the country folks for miles around.  This small battlefield covered about two acres and on the early morning of September 3, its soil was crimson with human blood.  Four members of the Home Guard were killed.  They were William Bell, Make Carmichael, Robert P. Brooks and Thomas Larkin.”  Elizabeth (Head) Brooks died on June 20, 1869 and was buried next to her husband in the Evergreen Cemetery in Elba, Alabama.  According to Marion Brunson, John W.
