BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-43

ROBERT ROSE BROOKS (1.2) is the son of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks.  Although Robert Rose Brooks was not mentioned in his father’s will, it is certain that he was a son of Robert Brooks, Sr.  In 1780, Robert Brooks gave consent for his son, Robert Rose Brooks, to marry Mary Parham.  Other than Robert Rose Brooks, there was only one other Robert Brooks living in Mecklenburg County, Virginia at the time, Robert Brooks, Sr.  Also, a second Robert Brooks was living in the same household of Robert Brooks, Sr. in the 1783 Personal Property Tax List of Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  According to Revolutionary War Pension Application of Robert Rose Brooks, Robert was born on June 3, 1762 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Robert’s middle name “Rose” is shown on his marriage consent certificate dated November 20, 1780.  Robert Rose Brooks (or Robert Brooks, Jr.) had three nephews named Robert which makes it difficult to distinguish the various family members apart.  However, it is fortunate that Robert Rose Brooks gave a detailed account of his places of residence in his pension application for Revolutionary War service.

In 1780, Robert Rose Brooks married Mary Parham in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  His certificate of consent to marry was signed by his father, Robert Brooks, Sr. and was dated November 20, 1780.  According to John Jones’ book, Robert Rose Brooks (Robert W. Brooks) “left seven sons by his first wife.”  In 1936, a grandson of Robert Rose Brooks stated that his grandfather was married three times, “his first wife had about eight or ten (children), mostly boys.”  Robert Rose Brooks not only appeared in the 1783 Personal Property Tax List of Mecklenburg County, Virginia but also appeared in at least the 1785 Personal Property Tax List.  Robert Rose Brooks does not appear any other years which do include his father, Robert Brooks, Sr.

Robert Rose Brooks served in the Revolutionary War and later received a pension for his service.  His pension application states that he “entered service of the United States on the 10th day of January 1780 and rendezvoused at Henry Deloney’s stand in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on that day.  That he belonged to Capt. Asa Oliver’s Company in Maj. Bines Jones battalion who was from Brunswick County and in the Regiment commanded by Col. James Fleming, I think from Chesterfield and attached to Genl. Mecklenburg’s Brigade.  He marched from the place of rendezvous to Petersburg, Vir., from thence our Regiment was marched to Cabin Point, from which place, I with some others was detached as a guard and went on a vessel stationed at Sandy Point on James River from which vessel we were called off some time in March and our Regiment was sent to stop the incursions of Arnold the Traitor who had stationed himself in Portsmouth, Vir.  We had a skirmish with some of his party and took seven prisoners.  While in the performance of this service, our time expired and I with the company was regularly discharged on the 10th April, 1781, making a three month tour.”  The pension application continues with much more of the service record of Robert Rose Brooks.

According to Robert Rose Brooks’ pension application, he moved to Edgefield County, South Carolina in January of 1800.  On February 5, 1787, a Robert Brooks was granted 204 acres in the Ninety-sixth District of South Carolina.  The 1790 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina enumerates a Robert Brooks with one male (greater than sixteen), three males (under age sixteen), three females and no slaves.  On December 24, 1794, a Robert Brooks and his wife, Ann Brooks, conveyed land in Edgefield County, South Carolina to Daniel Brannon which was originally sold to Robert Brooks by Coursey on March 24, 1794.  In 1799, a Robert Brooks sold land to Edmond Holland in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  It is not certain if the grant, deeds and census records were associated with Robert Rose Brooks.  In 1800, there were two Robert Brooks enumerated in the Edgefield County, South Carolina census records, both born between 1755 and 1774.  Again in 1810, there were two Robert Brooks enumerated in the Edgefield County, South Carolina census records.  However, one is distinguished from the other as Robert Brooks, Sr. (born prior to 1765) which probably was Robert Rose Brooks.  According to John Jones’ book, Robert Rose Brooks married a second time in 1800 in South Carolina and “by that union had two daughters.”  A grandson of Robert Rose Brooks (Robert W. Brooks), states that “his second wife had none (children).”

According to “Dictionary of Alabama Biography,” Robert Brooks moved to Pike County, Alabama in 1836.  In 1840, there were two Robert Brooks (born 1770 to 1780) enumerated in the census of Pike County, Alabama.  In 1844, Robert Rose Brooks requested that his pension be transferred to his new place of residence.  Robert Rose Brooks was the father of at least four children (mentioned in his will signed in 1841):

From 1789 to 1793, Frederick Jones is shown in the Mecklenburg County, Virginia personal property tax lists in the same household with his father-in-law, Robert Brooks, Sr.  On March 18, 1794, Robert and Abigail Brooks gave Frederick Jones 150 acres on Great Creek in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  From 1796 to 1810, Frederick Jones appears on Mecklenburg County, Virginia personal property tax lists.  On May 11, 1804, Penelope Jones is listed in the will of her father, Robert Brooks, Sr.  On January 1, 1807, “Frederick Jones and wife Penelope” were involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia concerning the division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Nelly’s father.  On October 9, 1809, “Nelly Brooks who married Frederick Jones” was involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Robert’s second wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her step-children for allotment of her widow’s dower.  Frederick and Penelope Jones were the parents of nine children:

   Richard P. Jones, b. 1788, Virginia
   Robert Jones, b. 1790, Virginia
   Temperance Jones (1.4.3), b. 1798, Virginia
   Wiley Green Jones (1.4.4), b. 1800, Virginia
   Martha Jones (1.4.5), b. 1807, Virginia
   Rebecca Jones (1.4.6)
   Eleanor Jones
   Mitchell Jones
   Frederick Williamson Jones

Apparently after the settlement of Robert Brooks’ estate, Frederick and Penelope Jones must have moved away from Mecklenburg County, Virginia as Frederick Jones does not appear on the 1811 and 1812 personal property tax lists of Mecklenburg County, Virignia.  Frederick Jones had died prior to December 16, 1817 when an inventory and appraisement of his estate was recorded in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  On January 26, 1818, Nelly (Brooks) Jones is mentioned in her father-in-law’s will in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  On March 5, 1855, Eleanor (Brooks) Jones signed her will in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.  Her will was later recorded on April 19, 1858 indicating that Eleanor (Brooks) Jones died in the early part of 1858.

On August 8, 1809, Robert Jones married Betsey Guy.  On December 8, 1810, Robert Jones married a second time to Betsey A. Jackson.  Robert Jones died in 1859.  On September 28, 1830, Martha Jones married her first cousin, Baxter Lambert.  For additional information on the descendants of Baxter and Martha Lambert, see the sketch of Baxter Lambert (1.10.1).  Rebecca Jones married her cousin, Robert “Robin” Thomas (1.9.1).  Eleanor Jones married John Rittenburg.  Frederick W. Jones died in 1834.
