7-6 INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES |
INTRODUCTION
This is the second edition of the Brooks Family History which primarily focuses on the descendants of the authors oldest proven Brooks ancestor, Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). The first edition of this family history was printed n 1982 and included only descendants of Roberts son, Jordan Brooks. With the discovery of the 1783 Personal Property Tax List showing Jordan Brooks living in the same household of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1), the authors became convinced that Jordan was indeed the son of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). It appears that Jordan and his brother, Robert Brooks, Jr., were omitted from the will of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1) because they left Virginia prior to the death of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). This book was originally based on a six page manuscript written by Susie (Brooks) Danforth in 1946. It was later discovered that Myrtle (Lackey) Ashley also had a similar manuscript which contained less interpretation and better reflected the authors ancestry. Each manuscript contains unique information, but both appear to have been derived from the same source on the older generations of Brooks families. During an interview with Susie Danforth in 1978 (Susie was 102 at the time), it was learned that much of the information contained in her manuscript was obtained from the Family Bible of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks (Susies parents). The authors have been unable to locate a copy of the information contained within this Bible and would appreciate any information which would aid in locating it. This Bible, if located, would be the only Bible which mentions the authors direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks and several of Jordans children and their families. Abbreviated versions of Susie (Brooks) Danforths manuscript were published in 1963 in the book Wimberley Legacy, edited by Williedell Schawe and in Susies own book, One Hundred Years in Wimberley, published on her 100th birthday in 1976.
Another major contributor was Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr. who was the primary researcher of the descendants of Jordans son, Isham Brooks (Ken has been the genealogist columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution since 1977). In addition to this input, Ken significantly contributed to many other sections of this book and deserves proper recognition for his participation in the compilation of this book. Jordans son, Isham Brooks and many of his descendants were published in 1950 in the book Brooks and Kindred Families by Ida (Brooks) Kellam. It erroneously shows that Isham Brooks was the son of John Hanna Brooks. In 1977, John M. Jones, Jr. published the book, History of Jones and Brooks Families of Escambia County, Alabama which include descendants of Robert Rose Brooks, son of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). Since publication of the first edition of this book in 1982, Bruce Montgomery Edwards published another book in 1985 worth noting, The Brooks of Virginia. This book provides excellent source material for future research on the ancestry of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). The complilation of this family history (and eight other family histories of equal size) was initiated by Bernice (Brooks) Casey, co-author of this publication. Without her interest in family history, the Casey family may have never compiled any of their family histories. Although Bernice died in March of 2003, she will continue to be listed as the co-author this family history because she assisted with these publications for over twenty years.

INTRODUCTION continued
Information has been obtained from many sources and references are listed with each descendant in order to aid future research on the future Brooks family researchers. Some of the information obtained on the Brooks family was conflicting or incomplete. Suggestions for additions and corrections are welcomed. Also, additional documentation which can be added as references would also be appreciated. The authors wish to thank the numerous Brooks families with which we have corresponded. Some major contributors include (in order as they appear the book): Leonard J. McCown, Beverly A. Sheeky, Linda (Lewis) Lepow, John M. Sheftall, Karen D. Rocher, Roberta J. Lumpkin, Thomas E. Pipes, Courtney C. Brooks, II, Travis Mills, Ida Marie (Smith) Williams, Sally (Brooks) Mittel, Noma (Brooks) Grunewald, Johnnie (Brooks) Aldis, Alton Howell Brooks, Opal (Ashley) Yundt, Howard T. Lee, Dee Ann Wimberley, Frank Austin Brooks, Eunice (Dobie) Watson (Hill research) and over 100 other contributors. In order to preserve these sources of information, their names are listed as references for each descendant that they provided information about.
This book uses the Henry numbering system which is based on the direct ancestors of the authors. The oldest proven Brooks ancestor of the authors is Robert Brooks, Sr. from Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Robert Brooks, Sr. was assigned the number (1). Each succeeding generation of direct ancestors of the authors were assigned consecutively higher numbers. The table of contents charts all the known ancestors of the authors and their assigned numbers. Each number appended to the first number represents a generation of descendants of a direct ancestor of the authors. Each child takes his/her Brooks related parents number and appends a unique child number to it. An example of this numbering system is as follows: David Allen Brooks was assigned the number, (4.8.11.1). Davids fathers number would be Davids number without the last digit appended to it, (4.8.11). Looking up this number, it can determined that Davids father is Ben Dean Brooks (4.8.11). Dropping the last digit off of the number assigned to Ben Dean Brooks would result in the number of (4.8). Looking up this number, it can determined that Bens father is Sylvester Wyatt Brooks (4.8). By leaving off the right-most digit again, would result in the number of (4). Looking up this number, it can be determined that Sylvester Wyatts father is Francis Asberry Brooks (4). This number, being a single digit, indicates that Francis Asberry Brooks is also a direct ancestor of the authors. The father of Francis Asberry Brooks (4) can be determined by subtracting one from his number resulting in the number (3). Looking up this number, the father of Francis Asberry Brooks (4) is Williamson Brooks (3). Similarly, Williamsons father would be Jordan Brooks (2) and Jordans father would be Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). Other examples of this numbering system are shown on the following page.
